- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30319 CATHOLIC OBSERVERS AT NATIONAL COUNCIL ASSEMBLY PHILADELPHIA -- Msgr. Joseph N. Moody of Highland Falls, N.Y., (left), and Msgr. Daniel Cantwell of Chicago (right) were two of five official Catholic observers at the triennial General Assembly of the National Council of Churches in Philadelphia. Msgr. Moody is head of Ladycliffe [sic] College’s Social Science Department, and Msgr. Cantwell is chaplain for the Catholic Council on Working Life and the Catholic Interracial Council of Chicago. They are shown with Dr. Franklin H. Littell of Chicago Theological Seminary, a major speaker at the assembly attended by representatives of 31 Protestant and Orthodox bodies. The other three Catholic observers were Father Benjamin Masse, S.J., of New York; Father Dennis J. Comey, S.J., of Philadelphia, and Msgr. John P. Connery of Overbrook, Pa. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30317 NCC HOLDS KENNEDY MEMORIAL SERVICE PHILADELPHIA -- President Kennedy, who was to have addressed the National Council of Churches’ General Assembly in Philadelphia, was memorialized at a special service held at the sessions. Officiating at the service were, left to right, J. Irwin Miller of Columbus, Ind., outgoing NCC president; Bishop George W. Baber of Philadelphia, African Methodist Episcopal Church; and Dr. Eugene Carson Blake, stated clerk, United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Bishop Baber read the litany and Dr. Blake led the worship service. It was attended by representatives of the NCC’s 31 Protestant and Orthodox bodies. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31812 NAMED TO MOSCOW MINISTRY PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Rev. James L. Barkenquast of Philadelphia, Pa., clergyman of the Lutheran Church in America and an editor of the denomination’s Board of Parish Education, has been named as the next Protestant chaplain to the English-speaking community in Moscow. He will succeed the Rev. Donald V. Roberts of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., whose term expires in mid-1965. The Moscow ministry, launched in 1962 and administered through the National Council of Churches, is supported by the Lutheran Church in America, American Baptist Convention and United Presbyterian and Protestant Episcopal Churches. Mr. Logan, formerly at St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, has raised Calvary from chapel status to that of an independent church. His present congregation is 90 per cent Negro, ten per cent white. - Text transcribed from caption: INTERRACIAL CHURCH #1663 PHILADELPHIA -- To a full congregation of both whites and Negroes, Rector Thomas Logan of Calvary Protestant Episcopal Church here describes the form of the service just completed. Calvary formerly was predominantly white, but a population shift cut its weekly Sunday attendance to about 25. It then was merged with St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, with Mr. Logan moving his congregation to Calvary in September 1945. Average Sunday attendance now is 250. - Text transcribed from caption: Suggested for use with RNS WEEK IN RELIGION for release Aug. 9, 1974 PC-45860 UNCANONICAL ORDINATIONS PHILADELPHIA -- Four Episcopal bishops ordained 11 women deacons to the priesthood in an uncanonical ceremony in Philadelphia’s Church of the Advocate (July 29). Although there is no Episcopal canon that specifically prohibits the ordination of women to the priesthood, the canons specifically state that “No deacon shall be ordained priest unless he be first recommended by the standing committee of the diocese to which he belongs.” None of the 11 women had received such a recommendation. Osborn, executive director of the American Church Union, the “high church” or “Anglo-Catholic” wing of the Episcopal Church, was one of five priests who protested the ordinations of 11 women to the priesthood at the Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-45843 EPISCOPAL BISHOP ORDAINS DAUGHTER PHILADELPHIA -- Acting in defiance of Church authority, Bishop Edward Welles II, retired bishop of West Missouri ordains his daughter, the Rev. Katrina Swanson of Leawood, Kan., to the priesthood of the Episcopal Church. Joining in the laying on of hands are two other women ordained in the same ceremony at the Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia -- the Rev. Emily Hewitt of Somerville, Mass., to the left of the bishop, and the Rev. Carter Heyward of New York. Eleven women deacons were ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Welles, retired Bishop Robert L.
