- Priest war hero dies at 58.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30748 PRIEST WAR HERO DIES AT 58 WORCESTER, Mass. -- Father Joseph T. O'Callahan of Worcester, the only American military chaplain to get the Congressional Medal of Honor--the nation's highest and rarest decoration for courage--died at the age of 58. Left photo shows the priest receiving the Medal of Honor in 1946 from President Truman at the White House. Father O'Callahan, a faculty member of Holy Cross College in Worcester for nearly 20 years, died on the eve of the 19th anniversary of the Japanese suicide attack on the aircraft carrier, Franklin, off the coast of Kobe on March 19, 1945. He received the medal for his heroism during that attack--beyond the call of duty--in helping to save the ship and the lives of men. The priest's exploits on that day were later subjects of a book, several magazine articles, a movie and a Navy training film. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (OJM-WOR-3D-64-NAB)

- Controversial baptism.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45943 CONTROVERSIAL BAPTISM MARLBORO, Mass. -- Three-month-old Nathaniel Ryan Morreale is baptized on the steps of Immaculate Conception Church in Marlboro, Mass., by Father Joseph O’Rourke, a Jesuit priest from New York, who defied Boston’s Cardinal Humberto Madeiros and his own Jesuit superior by performing the ceremony. The baby has become the center of an abortion controversy between his mother and the Catholic parish. The refusal of the parish priests to baptize the child was based primarily on the endorsement by the baby’s mother, Mrs. Carol Morreale, of a proposed abortion clinic in Marlboro, one supported by New York abortion advocate William Baird. In a statement, Cardinal Madeiros said the refusal of the priests to preform the baptism was taken “in accordance with clear requirements of the Church’s teaching as to the serious responsibility of parents to guarantee the Catholic upbringing of their children.” At the ceremony are, from left: godparents Linda Morreale and John Thompson, Mr. Baird, parents Carol and Daniel Morreale, and Father O’Rourke. The priest, who had been “expressly forbidden” by his superior to conduct the baptism, is assigned to the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility at the National Council of Churches and is a director of a group called Catholics for a Free Choice. - Siamese twins baptized.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-46291 SIAMESE TWINS BAPTIZED PHILADELPHIA -- Clara (left) and Altagracia Rodriguez, the two Siamese twins separated in a historic operation in Philadelphia last September, pose for a picture after their formal baptism into the Roman Catholic Church at Children’s Hospital. Father Gabrial Rea, C.M., of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, baptized the children. The girls, who were taken home to the Dominican Republic several days after the baptism, were given conditional baptism when they were born in August 1973, as they were not expected to survive. The ceremony in the chapel of Children’s Hospital was witnessed by the 23 members of the surgical team that separated the twins. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-PHI-12A-74-DS)
