- Pickets protest 'The Deputy'
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30659 PICKETS PROTEST 'THE DEPUTY' NEW YORK -- Pickets protesting the production of "The Deputy" carry their signs near the Brooks Atkinson Theater in New York. The play which charges Pope Pius XII with failure to speak out against the Nazi extermination of the Jews was picketed by this "Ad Hoc Committee," predominantly Catholic. Three other sets of pickets appeared: a unit of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which also protested the characterization of the Pope; a small group which supported Herman Shumlin producer-director of the controversial play; and 12 Swastika'd troopers of the American Nazi Party, who defended the Hitler regime by claiming the death of 6 millions was a "great lie." The Ad Hoc Committee announced it would picket daily throughout the run of the play. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-2D-64-W)

- President visits old Texas church.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30559 PRESIDENT VISITS OLD TEXAS CHURCH FREDERICKSBURG, Tex. -- President Johnson attends services at a 118-year-old Protestant Episcopal church at Fredericksburg, Tex., not far from the First Family's LBJ ranch. The Rev. Jack Langford, rector of the stone and log St. Barnabas church, bends carefully as he proceeds through the low front door. The congregation, as the chart shows, is only $4,000 short of its $15,000 building fund quota. Interior and exterior views of the old mission church are shown below. President Johnson, a member of the Disciples of Christ, and Mrs. Johnson, an Episcopalian, worshipped at the 30-seat church in early January. At the service the rector acknowledged a gift of new seat cushions from the Johnsons. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-D-DAL-ZA-64-W)
