- Seminarians march for civil rights.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30976 SEMINARIANS MARCH FOR CIVIL RIGHTS FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Students from Lutheran and Catholic seminaries at Fort Wayne, Ind., used a campaign appearance there by segregationist Gov. George C. Wallace of Alabama as an occasion for a joint demonstration in support of the civil rights bill. The seminarians, and five Lutheran professors, marched and disturbed anti-discrimination literature outside a hotel where Gov. Wallace held a press conference. Participating were 125 students from Concordia Senior College, a pre-theological liberal arts college of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and about 30 from the Crosier House of Studies, a seminary of the Crosier Fathers. Pope Paul VI also approved the cardinal’s request. Bound for the World’s Fair where an estimated 15 million people will view it at the Vatican Pavilion, the masterpiece was insured for $6 million while in transit. Another statue, “The Good Shepherd,” also brought from Vatican City, was insured for $2 million. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-4C-64-W)

- Cardinal's efforts for Israel disclosed.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31005 CARDINAL’S EFFORTS FOR ISRAEL DISCLOSED NEW YORK -- For the first time it was revealed that Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York (left), had a part in the admission of Israel to the United Nations in 1949. The disclosure was made by Charles H. Silver, president of Beth Israel Hospital (right), in introducing the cardinal at the hospital’s 75th anniversary dinner. With them is Mayor Robert F. Wagner. Mr. Silver reported that Cardinal Spellman contacted a number of South American countries in support of Israel’s entry into the U. N. These contacts, Mr. Silver said, were instrumental in the General Assembly approving the new nation’s membership. He added that the prelate’s assistance made “one of the most amazing stories of brotherhood and fellowship among men of good will.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-5C-64-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30864 CHARRED CROSS -- SYMBOL OF RECONCILIATION NEW YORK -- In solemn services in the Music Garden at the rear of the Protestant and Orthodox Center at the New York World’s Fair, the famed Charred Cross of Coventry Cathedral in England was dedicated as a reminder of the Christian message of reconciliation. Made from two charred oak beams that fell from the roof of the cathedral as it was destroyed in a 9140 German bombing raid, the Cross and the adjoining inscription, “Father Forgive,” will be on exhibit at the pavilion for the two years of the Fair. Dr. H.C.N. Williams (at far left), provost of Coventry Cathedral, presented the cross and a smaller Cross of Nails, made from 14th-century hand-forged nails, as symbols of the Christian message that “crucifixion must always be followed by resurrection.” Others taking part in the service (from left to right) were: Dr. James W. Kennedy, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, New York, and chairman of the committee of the U.S. Conference for the World Council of Churches which arranged for display of the Cross; Dr. Arthur Lee Kinsolving, rector of St. James Episcopal church, New York, and president of the Protestant Council of the City of New York, sponsor of the world’s fair pavilion; Dr. Cynthia C.
