- Nun is 'Pied Piper'; in Philippines.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32111 NUN IS ‘PIED PIPER’; IN PHILIPPINES MANILA -- Philippines children have their own “Pied Piper” in the person of Sister Elizabeth Cecile, a Maryknoll missionary who intersperses her religious lessons with music. The nun, who comes from Wheat Ridge, Colo., has found that there’s nothing like a flute to draw an eager audience of children -- but unliked the famous Pied Piper of Hamelin, she draws them into the family of God. Before joining the Maryknoll Sisters, the American nun played five instruments in a band -- flute, clarinet, saxophone, violin and piano. Her career includes five years in a professional “all-girl” band and two tours of the Pacific as a USO entertainer. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FRE-2A-65-NAB)

Here are three barefoot children praying before a glass-enclosed statue of St. Michael the Archangel. (right, top photo) a Maryknoll missionary from Binghampton, N.Y., appears at a deportation hearing in the Philippines with his chief counsel, Lorenzo M. Tanada, a former Senator in the Philippine National Congress. Below, documents are marked during the hearings as spectators look on. At the table, from left to right, are: Mr. Tanada, Father Gerlock, a deportation board clerk and a Philippine National Constabulary officer called as a witness. Maryknoll Bishop Joseph W. Regan, M.M., of Tagum stands at far right. Father Gerlock, arrested by the government at Tagum on the island of Mindanao last October, is still awaiting a ruling by the deportation board although the hearing on his case began in December 1973. Charged with being critical of Filipino martial law, he is free to “come and go” within the city of Manila but is still in a kind of “limbo” so far as his future is concerned. One of three Maryknollers arrested in October 1973 and slated for deportation, the veteran of 12 years’ service in the Philippines decided to plead “not guilty” to charges and demand a hearing. The basic subject of the work is the Last Supper but the artist says he tried to “crystallize” the great mystery of the death, passion and resurrection of Christ in the sculpture. The 13 figures are set in a circular base, made from tons of brass sheets which were painstakingly cut, shaped, polished and welded together. At 42 feet, Christ is the dominant figure, standing almost twice as tall as the others. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-MAN-12A-74-DS)

- Christmas in the Philippines.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-46295 CHRISTMAS IN THE PHILIPPINES Children everywhere love to dramatize the first Christmas, and Filipino children are no exception at a mission run by the Columban Fathers. No one enjoys Christmas more than the Filipinos -- and no one celebrates it for a longer time. Officially, the Christmas season begin on Dec. 16 with the first of the nine-day novena of dawn Masses, the “Misa de Gallo,” and doesn’t end until the Feast of the Epiphany, Jan. 6. Though they have adopted many Western customs, including the Christmas tree, most Filipinos tend to retain their own traditions, reports Columban Sister Rita Mekitarian in the current issue of Columban Mission magazine. “The lantern is a uniquely Filipino tradition,” according to Sister Rita. “Two weeks before Christmas, lanterns are hung in the doors and windows of all the homes. This comes from an old tradition in which the town crier made his rounds before the first dawn Mass, reminding the people to hand lanterns out -- so that the way to church would be brightly lit for all.” The Filipinos create their own lanterns and often their shape or design indicates the profession of their owner. A candle is used for light, though now in more urban areas the glow is provided by an electric bulb. Santa Claus is very popular in the Philippines, but another Christmas father-figure -- and mother-figure, too -- plays a prominent part in Filipino Christmas traditions. “They are the ‘ninong’ or ‘ninang’ -- the godfather or godmother,” reports Sister Rita. For Filipinos, the godparents are more than spiritual guardians. They are considered as compadres with the parents and at the same time have a social obligation to help the godchild in a material way. At Christmas, children visit their ninongs and ninangs, place the hand of their godparents on their forehead as a sign of respect. The godparents in turn give gifts to the children.
