- Controversial baptism.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45943 CONTROVERSIAL BAPTISM MARLBORO, Mass. -- Three-month-old Nathaniel Ryan Morreale is baptized on the steps of Immaculate Conception Church in Marlboro, Mass., by Father Joseph O’Rourke, a Jesuit priest from New York, who defied Boston’s Cardinal Humberto Madeiros and his own Jesuit superior by performing the ceremony. The baby has become the center of an abortion controversy between his mother and the Catholic parish. The refusal of the parish priests to baptize the child was based primarily on the endorsement by the baby’s mother, Mrs. Carol Morreale, of a proposed abortion clinic in Marlboro, one supported by New York abortion advocate William Baird. In a statement, Cardinal Madeiros said the refusal of the priests to preform the baptism was taken “in accordance with clear requirements of the Church’s teaching as to the serious responsibility of parents to guarantee the Catholic upbringing of their children.” At the ceremony are, from left: godparents Linda Morreale and John Thompson, Mr. Baird, parents Carol and Daniel Morreale, and Father O’Rourke. The priest, who had been “expressly forbidden” by his superior to conduct the baptism, is assigned to the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility at the National Council of Churches and is a director of a group called Catholics for a Free Choice. - Bishops tie abortion to excommunication.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45938 BISHOPS TIE ABORTION TO EXCOMMUNICATION HARTFORD, Conn. -- Connecticut’s Roman Catholic bishops, in a 16-page statement, declared that all Catholics in the state, particularly physicians and nurses, taking part in abortions face excommunication from the Church. At a Hartford news conference, Archbishop John Whealon of Hartford, Bishop Walter Curtis of Bridgeport and Bishop Vincent Hines of Norwich (left to right) discuss the statement. Focusing more directly on so-called abortion clinics than on hospitals, the statement, entitled “Your Conscience and Abortion,” indicated that general health personnel in hospitals would not be subject to excommunication if they were only indirectly participating in abortion procedures. However, the statement said that the excommunication penalty, set out in Catholic canon law, should be strictly applied to everyone, from the women receiving abortions to the aides who wheel them into operating rooms, in clinics devoted exclusively to abortions. LOUIS -- At top, Cardinal John Carberry of St. Louis welcomes Sister Catherine Pinkerton, C.S.J., chairperson of the National Assembly of Women Religious, to St. Louis University, which hosted the organization’s 4th annual convention. Looking on is Sister Helen Butler, O.P., president of the Sisters’ Senate of the Brooklyn diocese. Below, Sister Mary Jo O’Connor, D.W. (left), community health nurse for the Brooklyn Catholic Charities Office for the Aging, congratulates Sister Kathryn Sullivan, RSCJ, a Scripture scholar and author, after he keynote address to the convention. The more than 600 nuns taking part in the NAWR meeting overwhelmingly approved the recent ordination of 11 women to the Episcopal priesthood and sent a telegram to the Chicago meeting of the Episcopal House of Bishops -- which later declared the ordinations “invalid” -- urging them “to affirm and recognize” the ordinations. The participants also agreed to take part in a symbolic fast of bread and water to bring attention to the issue of world hunger and the threat of famine in many regions. - Says TV should improve quality of life.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45928 SAYS TV SHOULD IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE NEW YORK -- Father Ellwood Kieser, C.S.P., the priest-producer of TV’s “Insight” series -- and a driving force behind the new Humanitas awards for TV programs that stress human values -- believes television can serve the quality of life and help people “to grow, develop and become more fully human.” He also feels that TV can provide “an experience of common brotherhood” not easily forgotten. For the past 14 years, Father Kieser’s “Insight” series has made a valiant -- although often lonely -- effort to bring to this nation’s viewers, through top-notch dramatic presentations, Christian values which relate to the whole spectrum of life’s experience. Of the Humanitas awards -- which provide prizes of $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 to writers of prime-time TV fare -- the Philadelphia-born Paulist said it was the best way he and his Insight colleagues could devise to inspire and motivate TV programming that will humanize an audience. Compton Advertising, Inc., RIAL’s newest volunteer agency, has prepared a series of print advertisements and radio and television spots which emphasize social justice. In contrast to previous RIAL campaigns, which generally concentrated on a broad subject, the new campaign mentions several examples of actual neighborhood project that assist people who have social problems. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46174 TWO VIEWS OF BUSING BOSTON -- Students at Boston’s Hyde Park High School (top photo) look through a shattered window of their school bus, damaged when fights broke out between black and white students at the school. Several students were injured in the incident, just part of the violence which has marred Boston’s court-ordered busing plan since the start of the school year. A more peaceful view of busing is achieved by four Boston students as they discuss school desegregation efforts with a Charlotte, N.C., student coordinating council (bottom photo). The four students (foreground left to right), Barbara Steer, Dana Gonsal, Bob Messina and Linda Lawrence, are members of the Hyde Park High School biracial committee who were invited to the Southern City by students to get a look at integration and how it works in Charlotte’s public high schools, where a massive busing program has been in effect for 10 years. “We’re still working at it every day, and we don’t have any miracle answers," a Charlotte student told the Boston group. “But what was a new situation for us 10 years ago is a new situation for you now. And we want you to know we’ve learned a lot about judging anybody, black or white, as an individual. It just took time." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-BOS/NC-10D-74-DS)

A score of relatives of these Japanese women have come to New York to stage a hunger protest in front of the U.N., where they were joined by some 500 Japanese and American supporters. The demonstrators have demanded the United Nations send a commission to North Korea to investigate the matter, The organization sponsoring the protest, the Association for Free Travel for Japanese Wives of North Korea Repatriots, alleges that the North Korean authorities have not permitted any correspondence, telephone calls or visits with the 6,752 Japanese nationals who went to North Korea in 1959 voluntarily under a Red Cross agreement. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46133 SCHOOLS FIRE-BOMBED IN BOOK DISPUTE CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- Students arriving at Kanawha County's Midway Elementary School are greeted by a burned-out door after it and another elementary school were fire-bombed as violence escalated in the controversy over the use of supplemental English textbooks in public schools in the county. Both bombs exploded in the schools before any children had arrived. Pupils were taken to neighboring schools for classes. Demonstrations against the books began with the start of the school year in September. Protesters have charged that the materials are anti-Christian and anti-American. Statements from protesters indicated that they have adopted an intransigent attitude and will not wait for a review committee, appointed by the county board of education, to officially determine the future of the books. - Disagreement over ordinations.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46112 DISAGREEMENT OVER ORDINATIONS A Jesuit theologian said that an article he wrote in 1966 was recently “misinterpreted" by an Episcopal bishop who cited it as support for invalidating the ordinations of 11 women deacons. Father Frans Josef van Beeck, S.J. (left), associate professor of systematic theology at Boson College, said that Episcopal Bishop Arthur A. Vogel of West Missouri (right) had not drawn the proper conclusions from his 1966 article. In his report to the Episcopal House of Bishops in August, which voted to declare the women’s ordinations invalid, Bishop Vogel said that, based on Father van Beeck’s article, “validity (of ordination) means ecclesiastical recognition." The Jesuit said that it was “obvious" that Bishop Vogel attributed “much more substance" to his definition of validity than he himself had intended for it to have, and that the “warranted" conclusion from the article would be that the women’s ordinations “was irregular, but not invalid in the traditional sense." Bishop Vogel has not replied that it remains his belief that he did not misinterpret Father van Beeck. “More importantly," he continued, “neither my advisement nor the action of the House of Bishops depended in any positive way on the theological position of Father van Beeck."
