Laubach, internationally-know missionary “apostle of literacy,” addresses a meeting at the Marble Collegiate Reformed Church here to open a nation-wide campaign to have church people pray for the success of the Paris Peace Conference and the United Nations organization. The drive will be conducted in 25 cities throughout the country and has the endorsement of the Foreign Missions Conference of North America, the United Council of Church Women, and the Federal Council of Churches. Bromley Oxnam of New York, president of the Federal Council of Churches, delivers the keynote address at a Protestant Festival of Faith held here to commemorate Reformation Week. The bishop warned an audience of 12,000 assembled in Public Hall that force might postpone war but it would not create a permanent peace. “Atomic bombs and other weapons can, if we are successful, defeat the masses who fight for Russia,” he said. “But they cannot eradicate materialistic philosophy. Delegates heard reports that much of the Midwest is badly overchurched resulting in weak organization, declining membership, a poorly-paid ministry and ineffective youth activity. The three-day conclave was co-sponsored by the Home Missions Council, the Federal Council of Churches, and the International Council of Religious Education.
