A Negro child wishes them bon voyage. Two of them were arrested in Jacksonville. At far right is Mrs. Malcolm Peabody, wife of the retired Episcopal Bishop of Central New York and mother of Massachusetts’ governor; she was arrested on March 31. At center is Mrs. John M. Burgess, wife of the Suffragan Bishop of Massachusetts and first Negro bishop of the Church in the U.S. Mrs. Burgess was jailed March 30 by Jacksonville police when she sought service in a motel cocktail lounge. At left is Mrs. D.J. Campbell, wife of the former Episcopal Bishop of Los Angeles. Mrs. Peabody, 72, said they took part in the segregation protest like any “three nice peaceful women.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-3D-64-W)

- Evangelist carries crusade to barroom.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31605 EVANGELIST CARRIES CRUSADE TO BARROOM BOSTON -- Evangelist Billy Graham preached to 14,000 in Boston Garden at the opening of his crusade there, then spoke to a smaller, enthusiastic but noisier audience, at Izzy Ort's Golden Nugget Bar in the city's nightlife district. Here the evangelist chats with a patron in the bar. The "twist" band stopped playing as he told the crowd their bodies "need spiritual food." Several shouts of "We will, we will" answered his suggestion that they attend church. Mr. Graham visited the bar while on a police-escorted tour of the nightclub area. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30270 GIFTS TO BE REMEMBERED The Church was very much a part of the life of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Above, the Kennedy brothers are shown as they presented a check for $1,178,000 to the then Archbishop Richard J. Cushing of Boston. The funds, from the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, were used for four archdiocesan projects. The foundation was named for the President’s older brother Joseph, killed in World War II. In this photo, Ted Kennedy is at left, Robert at right. Below, the first Catholic president of the United States receives a gift from Pope Paul VI at Vatican City. The gift was a model of the Pieta, Michelangelo’s masterpiece which will be exhibited at the Vatican Pavilion during the New York World’s Fair. The Pope lauded Mr. Kennedy and the U.S. government for its efforts to promote racial equality. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-11E-63-W)

- Mass, Mozart's requiem honor Kennedy.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30504 MASS, MOZART'S REQUIEM HONOR KENNEDY BOSTON -- Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, greets Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy and Sen. Edward Kennedy at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross where a religious and civic memorial honored the late President Kennedy. A Solem Pontifical Requiem Mass was celebrated by the cardinal before some 1,800 invited guests including Protestant, Orthodox and Jewish clergymen, federal officials and state and civic dignitaries. The service was seen by millions over network television. Mozart's Requiem in D Minor, with Erich Leinsdorf conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a 180-voice choir, was heard during the Mass. In a eulogy following the Mass, Cardinal Cushing observed that the musical genius of Mozart and the genius of President Kennedy's leadership had been linked in the religious and civic memorial which had rich ecumenical and cultural overtones.
