- Rural church revival in Panama.
- Description
- Bejuco, Panama--Native children stand outside a small rural Catholic church under construction here in the interior of Panama. The structure is one of a number in a church building revival among Panamanian villages. The revival is said to be intended to counteract the increased activity of Protestant groups doing missionary work in rural areas. With improved transportation, Catholic priests and missionaries will visit these new churches more often to minister to the spiritual needs of the people. Small churches like this are springing up through rural Panama. There appears to be a revival of church building which may be explained as the action of the Roman Catholic Church, traditional church of the Panama people, against the increasing activity of some 12 different Protestant groups now doing missionary work within the Republic of Panama. Many times there have been villages in the interior of Panama where a priest came to say mass only the one day a year of the patron saint of the village. Now, with improved transportation, these smaller villages are receiving more visits from the clergy. This church under construction was at Bejuco, on the Pan-American Highway in interior Panama, and was being built by a neighborhood group to house their devotions.

- Goat clowns around at animal shelters.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31471 GOAT CLOWNS AROUND AT ANIMAL SHELTERS VICTORIA, B.C. -- Twinkle, a playful three-year-old goat at the Good Shepherd Shelter outside Victoria, British Columbia, keeps nuns on their toes and does a bit of toe-dancing herself. Sister Mary Julia (left) takes a playful bump and Mother Cecilia Mary (right) admires Twinkle's performance. "She does this just to tease me -- Twinkle is just a clown at heart," says Mother Cecilia, 75, who founded the shelter for stray and abandoned animals in 1922 as the Order of the Sisters of the Love of Jesus. She and five other nuns care for nearly 150 dogs, cats, goats and birds and currently are conducting a fund drive for $40,000 to build an animal hospital on the 23-acre site. Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, has donated $1,000 to the campaign. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RB-VBC-8E-64-NBM)

- Religious structures offer new, free architectural expression.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30481 RELIGIOUS STRUCTURES OFFER NEW, FREE ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION As modern architecture has surged into new areas of expression, houses of worship have provided the profession one of its most dramatic outlets. The president of the American Institute of Architects, Geoffrey N. Lawford, says architects “are finding increased encouragement in translating traditional building symbols and forms into meaningful contemporary terms” through religious structures. The New York Chapter of the AIA in January held a major exhibit on “Churches and Temples: Postwar Architecture” at a NYC gallery. Among the 21 religious structures featured were: (upper left) the “23 de Ener” (23rd of January) Roman Catholic church in Caracas, Venezuela, which utilizes a swooping design; the Lansing (Ill.) Presbyterian church (upper right), with sharp lines emphasizing man’s direct relationship to God; St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Oklahoma City, Okla., (lower left) an example of paraboloid, geometric design, and (lower right), a structure called the “Roofless Church,” a memorial to the Rappites, a utopian religious community which was founded in New Harmony, Ind., some 150 years ago.
