- A day in the life of a priest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PRIEST #1558 The priest’s evenings are spent attending meeting of the various societies attached to the parish or in officiating at special devotions in the church. Here Father Haye is shown conducting a class for the deaf, two of whom are seen wearing hearing aides. Each parish has a number of men’s and women’s organizations, which meet regularly in the rectory or school hall. There are also weekly convert classes, and many parishes conduct social evenings once a week for teen age members. - Punjab Sikhs form colorful colony.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PUNJAB SIKHS FORM COLORFUL COLONY #1545 VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Some 40 years ago pioneering Sikhs from Punjab came here and settled around Vancouver, New Westminster and Victoria. Although they have become successful businessmen and farmers, they have kept many of their Punjab ways, most evident of which is their religion. Here a venerable priest, barefooted and cross-legged, reads the Granth, the sacred book of the Sikhs. It is a compilation of the songs of Nanak, who founded the religion 450 years ago, and those of other poets. Although they have become successful businessmen and farmers, they have kept many of their Punjab ways, most evident of which is their religion. Founded 450 years ago by Nanak, a native of Lahore, the Sikhs have their own temple here, altar of which is shown above. Richly embroidered silk and satin with which it is covered is of great value and antiquity. Guards stand with drawn swords all during service. There are no seats in temple and participants sit on the floor. Like guards, they remove their shoes before entering place of worship. NORTH CHURCH OF PAUL REVERE FAME #1529 BOSTON -- The oldest church in this city, Christ Protestant Episcopal Church is one of the historical landmarks of the United States; for it was here, on April 19, 1775, from its tall steeple, that the signal lantern told Paul Revere of the march of the British troops to Lexington and Concord. The famous phrase, “One if by land, two if by sea” referred to those lanterns. At that time the edifice was known as Old North Church. It was erected 1723 and has been used practically without interruption since the last Sunday in December of that year except for a period during the Revolution when the church was closed “by military necessity.” (one of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EM-BOST-MES-3A-6-ROTO-A-E-O)

- Title
- Ordination of a priest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: ORDINATION OF A PRIEST #1507 At the start of the ordination ceremony, which takes place during Mass, the five candidates for the priesthood, approaching the climax of their long years of study, proceed to the altar, lighted candles in their hands to show honor to God. Over the left arm they carry chasubles, and on the left forearm wear maniples. Significance of the chasuble, the outermost garment worn by priests at Mass, is all-covering charity and the yoke of Christ. Chasuble is from the Latin, meaning “a little House.” Maniple signifies the sorrows of life, and the bonds of Our Lord. Worn over the left shoulder is the stole, symbol of hierarchical order and the immortality of which man is unworthy. - Ordination of a priest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: ORDINATION OF A PRIEST #1506 Following laying on of hands, the bishop talks on dignity of priesthood, then invests each deacon with the chasuble. The bishop invokes the blessing of God and while the “Veni, Creator Spiritus” is song, he anoints the palms of the hands of the future priests with Oil of the Catechumens. Oil symbolizes the priestly and royal power of Christ. The bishop also delivers to each a chalice and paten, saying, “Receive the power to celebrate Mass both for the living and the dead in the name of the Lord.” (No. 4 of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (DOT-U-NY-JOG-2C-6-C-D)
