- Text transcribed from caption: P-30864 CHARRED CROSS -- SYMBOL OF RECONCILIATION NEW YORK -- In solemn services in the Music Garden at the rear of the Protestant and Orthodox Center at the New York World’s Fair, the famed Charred Cross of Coventry Cathedral in England was dedicated as a reminder of the Christian message of reconciliation. Made from two charred oak beams that fell from the roof of the cathedral as it was destroyed in a 9140 German bombing raid, the Cross and the adjoining inscription, “Father Forgive,” will be on exhibit at the pavilion for the two years of the Fair. Dr. H.C.N. Williams (at far left), provost of Coventry Cathedral, presented the cross and a smaller Cross of Nails, made from 14th-century hand-forged nails, as symbols of the Christian message that “crucifixion must always be followed by resurrection.” Others taking part in the service (from left to right) were: Dr. James W. Kennedy, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, New York, and chairman of the committee of the U.S. Conference for the World Council of Churches which arranged for display of the Cross; Dr. Arthur Lee Kinsolving, rector of St. James Episcopal church, New York, and president of the Protestant Council of the City of New York, sponsor of the world’s fair pavilion; Dr. Cynthia C. Wedel of New York, assistant general secretary for program, National Council of Churches; Greek Orthodox Archdeacon Polycarp; Archbishop Iakovos, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America and a WCC president; Charles C. She is congratulated here by the Rev. Malcolm Blackburn, associate executive director of the department, which she will continue to serve. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30791 EASTER DAWN SERVICE AT RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL NEW YORK -- More than 5,500 persons were in New York’s Radio City Music Hall at 7 a.m. Easter morning to take part in the 45th annual Easter Dawn Service sponsored by the Manhattan Division of the Protestant Council of the City of New York. Musical selections were provided by the Hope College Chapel Choir of Holland, Mich., (top photo) and the “Sponono Singers” of South Africa, members of the cast of the Broadway play, “Sponono,” by Alan Paton and Krishna Shah. Among those leading the hour-long service (bottom photo) were, from left to right: Philip Huston, a Broadway actor and lay member of St. Clement’s Episcopal church in Manhattan; the Rev. L.E. Terrell, pastor of Manhattan’s Union Baptist church; Dr. Lawrence L. Durgin, president of the Protestant Council’s Manhattan Division and pastor of Broadway Congregational church; Dr. Walter E. Bock, pastor of St. Peter’s Lutheran church in New York (at podium), and Dr. Dan M. Potter, executive director of the Protestant Council (far right). The sermon was delivered by Dr. Richard Allen Hildebrand, pastor of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal church in Manhattan, who declared that the Easter message calls on all Americans to work for equal rights for all citizens. From 1951 to 1953 Dr. Katongole studied in the United States on a scholarship awarded by the Council’s Department of World Literacy and Christian Literature. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-29791 LUNCHES FOR CIVIL RIGHTS MARCHERS NEW YORK -- Interracial and interreligious -- that was the theme of a giant sandwich packaging program carried on by the National Council of Churches, which prepared 80,000 box lunches for participants in the civil rights march on Washington. Roman Catholic nuns joined Protestant and Orthodox volunteers in a 13-hour project carried out in the hall of Riverside Church in New York City. - Text transcribed from caption: P-29748 NCC CHORUS REHEARSES FOR WASHINGTON MARCH NEW YORK -- “Freedom Songs,” which have become increasingly familiar across the nation with the accelerating pace of demonstrations for racial justice, were to have a place in the massive civil rights march on Washington, D.C., on Aug. 28. One musical group scheduled to take part in the demonstration was comprised of volunteers from the National Council of Churches staff in New York City.
