May this day mark the beginning of a road which, with God’s help, lead us to the day when our Churches can be reunited.” The relic -- the skull of St. Andrew, the Greek diocese’s patron saint -- was returned following conversations between Pope Paul and Metropolitan Constantine of Patras in the Holy Land. - Orthodoxy approves dialogue with Catholicism.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-29944 ORTHODOXY APPROVES DIALOGUE WITH CATHOLICISM RHODES, Greece -- An historic picture of an historic moment: the meeting of representatives of Eastern Orthodox Churches as they agreed, unanimously, to enter into “dialogue” with the Roman Catholic Church. The split of Orthodoxy with Roman Catholicism dates from 1054. Only major Orthodox body not represented was the Orthodox Church in Greece which had refused to send delegates and had opposed talks with the Catholic Church. Delegates carefully stressed that “reconciliation,” not “reunion,” was to be the immediate goal of Vatican-Orthodoxy talks. Heading the meeting as chairman was Metropolitan Meliton of Eliupolis and Thera, representative of Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras of Istanbul, supreme leader of Eastern Orthodoxy. He is shown at the head table, standing beneath the crucifix. Conference also decided that Orthodox Churches must decide individually whether to send delegate-observers to the Second Vatican Council’s second session. The young and old lying on the steps praying to be cured are part of an Easter pilgrimage to the shrine which annually attracts 100,000 persons. The pilgrimage to Tenos, a small island in the Aegean Sea, dates back to medieval times. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FWN-NY-2C-7-JOG-W)

- "Civilian" premier takes over in Greece.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45824 ‘CIVILIAN’ PREMIER TAKES OVER IN GREECE ATHENS -- The tide turns from a military junta to a civilian-run government of Greece. Army leaders in Greece have turned back the reins of government to the people, and a conservative politician, long self-exiled in Paris, returns to head the government. Constantine Caramanlis, right, is shown as he took the oath of office as Price Minister from Archbishop Seraphim, Primate of Greece and Archbishop of Athens. Key to the turnover was the chaotic situation in Cyprus. Mr. Caramanlis had spent 11 years in exile in France. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (1-NY-7D-74-W)
