- Rabbinical council decides marital status.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: RABBINICAL COUNCIL DECIDES MARITAL STATUS #j-3006 BUDAPEST -- The persecution and death of millions of Jews in Europe during the Nazi regime has resulted in the breakup of their families and subsequent bewilderment on the part of many as to their exact marital status. This has been further complicated by the lack of evidence of death, necessitating relaxation of the usual laws. To cope with the problem, the Rabbinical Council of the Central Bureau of Hungarian Orthodox Jewry has set up a special court to rule on cases of remarriage for all Eastern Europe. Here the court is considering the cases of two women (left) whose husbands have disappeared. Seated at the table are (left to right): Rabbi Paneth, secretary of the court; Rabbi Jacob Lebovitsch; Rabbi M. Cohn; Rabbi Welz, and Rabbi Usher Babad.
