- Pope marks Polish Christian millennium, 1966.
- Description
- Vatican City -- Amid the grandeur of St. Peter's Basilica's main alter, Pope Paul VI addresses a huge congregation at a Mass marking the 1,000th anniversary of Christianity in Poland. Thousands of Polish pilgrims from various parts of the world were gathered in the basilica, along with many church and other dignitaries. Pope Paul criticized as "not justified" the Polish government's refusal to permit a papal visit to millennium observances.

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30997 POPE SAYS MASS FOR CATHOLIC WORKERS VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI is cheered as he is carried on his portable throne in St. Peter’s Basilica where he said Mass for Catholic workers in connection with the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. In an address, later broadcasted by the Vatican Radio in many languages, the Pope stressed the Church’s “understanding of the world of labor.” He exhorted Catholic workers to become apostles of the Church’s social teachings, to be alert to un-Christian influences among their own ranks, and to fight against temptations to become lax in practicing their faith. They were proclaimed saints by Pope Paul VI in solemn ceremonies attended by some 10,000 persons, including bishops from around the world in Rome for the Vatican Council and many Africans. The martyrs were put to death between 1885 and 1887 by order of a pagan chief, King Mwanga of Buganda, for refusing to denounce their new faith. They included men and boys between 14 and 50 years of age. All had been beatified in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (K-10D-64-NAB)

- Blind Ugandan at martyrs' canonization.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31737 BLIND UGANDAN AT MARTYRS’ CANONIZATION VATICAN CITY -- Among the many Africans present at the canonization of 22 Uganda martyrs was this aged Ugandan convert, Augustine Kalema, who was blinded during the persecution of Christians in the 19th century. The martyrs were raised to the supreme dignity of the altar at solemn ceremonies presided over by Pope Paul VI in St. Peter’s Basilica. They had been killed between 1885 and 1887 by King Mwanga, a pagan chief, for not denouncing their Catholic faith after being converted by missionaries of the White Fathers. All male, they were between 14 and 50 years in age. The martyrs now take their place with other Negro saints of the Church, among them being St. Benedict the Moor and St. Martin de Porres.
