- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45903 SEOUL SENTENCES EX-PRESIDENT, CHURCHMEN SEOUL -- A former South Korean President, a Roman Catholic bishop, two Protestant leaders, and a respected historian were sentenced to prison by a special military court in Seoul for opposing the regime of President Park Chung Hee. The former President, Yun Po-Sun (left), 76, who was accused of having passed funds to students for anti-government demonstrations in April, was given a suspended three-year sentence. The head of the court-martial said the court was “lenient” with Mr. Yun because of his past contribution to the nation as head of state (1960-62). Catholic Bishop Daniel Tji Kak Soun of Won Ju (right), 53, an outspoken critic of the Park regime, was sentenced to 15 years and his “civil rights” were suspended for another 15 years. - Korean president's wife slain.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45912 KOREAN PRESIDENT’S WIFE SLAIN SEOUL -- The wife of South Korean President Park Chung Hee was fatally wounded here by a gunman who attempted to assassinate her husband. Mrs. Park, 49, died in a Seoul hospital on Aug. 15 several hours after she was shot in the head during a national observance of Korean independence from Japan. The murder of Mrs. Park was viewed here not only a personal tragedy for South Korea’s First Family but also as highly unfortunate for the growing human rights movement, which includes many Christians, opposed to the Park government, a military-backed regime. President Park was not injured in the attack. He apparently ducked a first bullet fired when a lone gunman ran up to the platform where the president was speaking in Seoul’s National Theater. A second bullet struck Mrs. Park, who sat behind her husband. The assailant was captured. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-8C-74-DS)

- Korean Catholics clash with police.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46090 KOREAN CATHOLICS CLASH WITH POLICE SEOUL, South Korea -- Father Antonio Shin, a Ronan Catholic priest, is carried away by riot police as some 1,500 to 2,000 Catholic priests and laity clashed with police in Seoul, during a demonstration demanding the release of Bishop Daniel Tji Hak Soun and other political prisoners. It was the first street protest since demonstrations were banned last August by the government of President Park Chung Hee. The Park regime is increasingly branded as "repressive" by South Korea's Christian minority. The incident marked a significant escalation of tension between the government and the Catholic Church. Bishop Tji of Won Ju is one of more than a dozen clergymen -- the others are Protestant -- arrested and sentenced to long prison terms on allegations of trying to overthrow President Park. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: Suggested for use with RNS WEEK IN RELIGION for Nov. 29 PC-46269 OPPOSING FORCES SEOUL -- Members of the New Democratic Party, South Korea’s major opposition party, is met by a sea of riot police helmets as they attempt to come out of the National Assembly in Seoul to stage a demonstration demanding revision of the country’s constitution. Such scenes have become common in South Korea as groups have attempted to voice their opposition to the repressive policies of President Park Chung Hee. During the past year a significant part of South Korea’s Christian community -- 3.4 million Protestants and 800,000 Catholics in a total population of 31 million -- has been actively engaged in the struggle against those policies. Korean clergymen, as well as American missionaries, have expressed their anxiety that President Ford’s visit to Seoul would give a symbolic U.S. blessing to President Park’s government. - U.S. priest arrested again.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-46274 U.S. PRIEST ARRESTED AGAIN SEOUL -- On the eve of President Ford’s visit to South Korea, Maryknoll Father James P. Sinnott from Brooklyn, N.Y., is arrested by riot police at the U.S. Embassy compound in Seoul as he joined about 20 Korean women in a peaceful demonstration asking American aid in winning release of political prisoners. Father Sinnott, a resident of South Korea since 1950, is Vicar General of the Inchon diocese, west of Seoul. It was the second time in a week that he had been arrested while taking part in a demonstration. The women, mostly wives and mothers of dissidents jailed under emergency decrees of President Park Chung Hee last Summer, said they wanted to present a petition asking Mr. Ford to request the release of the prisoners when he met Mr. Park. - Missionary deported by Korea.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-46543 MISSIONARY DEPORTED BY KOREA SEOUL -- The Rev. George Ogle, a United Methodist missionary, waves as he boards a plane in Seoul after he was ordered deported from South Korea for criticizing the regime of President Park Chung Hee. Forced to leave his wife and four children behind, the 45-year-old native of Pennsylvania was placed on a California-bound Korean jetliner by police. Deportation was ordered when the missionary, who had been in South Korea for 20 years, refused to retract comments critical of the Park government for its arrests of students, intellectuals and clergy who asked for a restoration of democracy.
