- Text transcribed from caption: #1002 CATHOLIC EDUCATOR BECOMES FIRST COMMODORE CHAPLAIN WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With his left hand on the Bible he used when a student for the priesthood at the Sulpician Seminary here, Capt. Robert J. White, dean of the School of Law, Catholic University of America, takes the oath which henceforth distinguishes him as the first commodore chaplain in the history of the American Navy. The precedent-setting ceremony took place in the office of Rear Admiral William N. Thomas (left), USN, who administered the oath in the presence of a number of Navy officials, Congressmen and high government officials. Former national chaplain of the American Legion and vice-president, 1934-36, of FIDAC, a world organization of World War I veterans, Father White was nominated for the commission by President Truman. - Text transcribed from annotations: #882 LEADER IN INTER-RACIAL LIVING Mrs. Harper Sibley, of Rochester, N.Y., president of the United Council of Church Women, who refuses to take part in any meeting of that group if it is held in cities where all facilities are not available to persons of all races and creeds. At the latest conference of the United Council of Church Women, just closed at Washington, D.C., Mrs. Sibley lived at the headquarters offices of the National Council of Negro Women. She is shown at a desk in the building making plans for the day’s sessions, which were held at the First Congregational Church in Washington.
