- Controversial play opens.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30658 CONTROVERSIAL PLAY OPENS NEW YORK -- The marquee in the background signals the opening of "The Deputy" as a patrolman watches pickets protesting production of the play. One sign calls on Mayor Wagner to ban the drama in New York. Some 150 pickets, representing a predominantly Catholic Ad Hoc Committee and a unit of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, demonstrated against the drama which charges Pope Pius XII with remaining silent during the Nazi extermination of Jews. The pickets paraded and displayed their signs without incident. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-2D-64-W)

- Ousted as Soviet leader.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31719 OUSTED AS SOVIET LEADER Nikita Khrushchev has been ousted from his posts as Premier of the U.S.S.R. and first secretary of the Soviet Communist Party. Seventy years old, he was relieved, according to the Moscow announcement, “in view of his advanced age and deterioration of his health.” But it was apparent that his retirement was enforced. The Red advocate of “co-existence” was faced by growing independence of European Communist parties and by a Cold War growing hot with the Chinese Communist regime. His replacement by Leonid Brezhnev as chief of the party and Alexei Kosygin as premier preceded by only a day the announcement that Red China had exploded its first nuclear bomb.
