- Churches challenged on world hunger.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46656 CHURCHES CHALLENGED ON WORLD HUNGER NEW YORK -- The Rev. Arthur Simon, a Lutheran clergyman who heads the Christian citizens’ movement on hunger -- Bread for the World -- tells a gathering of Roman Catholic Bishops and priests that U.S. Christians have failed to indicate their concern over world hunger sufficiently to prod government action on the food crisis. In asking, “Where are the Christians?” Mr. Simon observed that Church leaders have said all the right things about the world hunger and poverty situation. But, he added, Christian people at the grassroots level have not responded. He said there is a “big gap” between words and action. The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod clergyman made his remarks in a speech at the New York Catholic Center to diocesan clergy and lay officials concerned with promoting the annual American Catholic Overseas Aid Fund appeal. - Report on corporate challenges.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46615 REPORT ON CORPORATE CHALLENGES NEW YORK -- Representatives of groups in the Church Project on U.S. Investments in Southern Africa report on stockholder challenges underway against U.S. corporations doing business in southern Africa during a press conference in New York. From left to right are: Dr. Howard Schomer of the United Church Board for World Ministries; Canon Burgess Carr, general secretary of the All Africa Conference of Churches; Dr. Donald Wilson, chairman of the Church Projects; Brother Robert Taylor of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement; and Timothy Smith, coordinator of the Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility. It was announced that 14 U.S. religious groups have joined in a stock action asking International Business Machines (IBM) to stop selling computers to the Republic of South Africa. Nine Protestant agencies and five Roman Catholic orders, owning a total of more than $9 million in IBM stock, are parties to a shareholder resolution that accuses the corporation of supporting South African “apartheid” (racial separation). Computers, challengers say, help South Africa’s white minority government “oppress” the black majority. IBM is one of seven corporations being challenged this year on South African operations by one or more groups in the Church Project. The other companies are Phillips Petroleum, Getty Oil, Standard Oil of California, International Telephone and Telegraph, Union Carbide and the Southern Company. - "Show business chapel."
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46620 ‘SHOW BUSINESS CHAPEL’ NEW YORK -- For Austin Miles, the term “show business chapel” has two meanings. It is the title of a series of 100 “spots” that the 40-year-old Assemblies of God minister has recorded in Detroit for national distribution through Video Associates, Inc. And it is also a description of the portable worship center that he takes with him on his travels as announcer for the Royal Lipizzan Stallion Show, “The Wonderful World of Horses.” As the first international show business chaplain of the Assemblies of God, Mr. Miles has brought a Christian witness to the horse show, as he had done earlier for several circuses he had served as ringmaster. “Show business people are no different from any other people in their basic needs,” he points out. “They’ve got problems, face temptations, have tough schedules. Even a glamorous performer needs assurance of the love of God.” Here, Mr. Miles (right) chats with G. Edward Nelson Jr. of the American Bible Society in the portable chapel he has set up in a Madison Square Garden dressing room. Featuring talks by experts on Haiti (where Bishop Holly ministered for more than 50 years), the conference is co-sponsored by the cathedral and the Black Episcopal Clergy Association. Bishop Holly was born in Washington in 1829 of Roman Catholic free parents, later converting to the Episcopal Church. He was ordained a deacon in 1855 and a priest the following year. In 1874, he was consecrated bishop of Haiti, becoming the first black to be elevated to the episcopate by the Church. He died in 1911. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (JN-WAS-1D-75-DS)

- Reform Judaism produces commentary on Torah.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: J-46602 REFORM JUDAISM PRODUCES COMMENTARY ON TORAH NEW YORK -- Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut of Holy Blossom Temple, Toronto, examines Volume I of the first commentary on the Torah ever to be produced by Reform Judaism in North America. Done under the auspices of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the Commentary on Genesis took four years to produce. Rabbi Plaut wrote the commentary with the assistance of Professors Stanley Gevirtz and William W. Hallo of Yale University and Matitiahu Tsevat of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Although every program of Jewish education teaches Torah, few texts combine the elements of Hebrew, translation and commentary in the manner of the new work. Each book of the Torah is divided into six sections -- an introductory note, the original Hebrew, the new translation of the Jewish Publication Society, a brief commentary on the text with a discussion of the section’s major theme or themes, and a section of “Gleanings.” The gleanings are quotations and excerpts from a wide variety of sources, including the Koran and the writings of such literary figures as Shakespeare and John Milton. “This commentary takes the religious approach,” Rabbi Plaut said. “It recognizes the touch of the Divine, but it also takes cognizance of the latest scientific research. It represents the teaching tradition of Israel.” He explained that “our commentary disagrees with traditional interpreters over divine origin and Mosaic authorship, but it does agree with them on treating the text as it is, a unified whole, for it was approached this way by many generations and, in this way, it has made its impact on history.” Volume I of the commentary, published Jan. 15, will be available at $12.50 in hardcover and $7.50 in paperback. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: SUGGESTED FOR USE WITH RNS WEEK IN RELIGION FOR DEC. 20. C-46533 THE CARDINAL GIVES A PARTY NEW YORK -- “Now what was it I wanted for Christmas?” seems to be what this young lady is thinking as she attends Cardinal Terence Cooke’s annual Christmas party in New York. The cardinal hosted the party for the children of the New York Foundling Hospital and other child care programs of Catholic Charities. Cardinal Cooke personally greeted all those in attendance to wish them a blessed Christmas and to express his gratitude for their generosity to the many youngsters who benefit from the proceeds of the annual affair. The party included entertainment by comedian Sam Levenson, the cardinal sang “Love Makes the World Go Round” solo and “Come All Ye Faithful” with Julius La Rosa, and Santa Claus was on hand with gifts for the children. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45116 CHURCH GROUPS PLAN PROXY ACTION NEW YORK -- The spring's round of annual corporation stockholders' meetings will see an increased number of proxy resolutions brought by church groups challenging corporation policies in Southern Africa and Guinea-Bissau. Stockholder challenges against 20 corporations were announced in New York by the Church Project on United States Investments in Southern Africa. At the press conference announcing the action were, from left to right: Mustafa Sam of the Organization of African Unity; Dr. Donald Wilson, chairman of the Church Project; the Rev. Sterling Cary, president of the National Council of Churches; Father Michael Daniel, superior general of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, and Timothy Smith, project director for the Interfaith Committee on Church Responsibility in Investments. Supporters of the project, which filed its first challenges in 1972, have increased from five denominations and the National Council of Churches last year to nine denominations and the NCC participating this year. For the first time the project is being supported by a Catholic agency -- the Atonement Friars. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO by Chris Sheridan (CS-NY-1B-74-DS)

- Daniel Berrigan rejects award.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45069 DANIEL BERRIGAN REJECTS AWARD NEW YORK -- Blasting what he called his critics in the "armies of orthodoxy," Father Daniel Berrigan, S.J., has rejected the Gandhi Peace Award he was to receive in New York Jan. 9. Announcement that the 52-year-old priest had been selected for the honor brought protests from Jews and others angered by what they considered an anti-Israeli speech Father Berrigan made before an Arab student group in October. Refusing the award "brings me somewhat near to the spirit of Gandhi," he said in a letter to Promoting Enduring Peace, sponsor of the award. "lt is not a time for reward, but a time for labor". Father Berrigan said in the letter that American Catholic opposition to his peace efforts -- which led to imprisonment for burning draft records -- had expanded beyond the "bellicose dogmas of Cardinal Spellman." "Now it is on three fronts, Catholic, Protestant and Jewish, that the armies of orthodoxy appear, " he wrote. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS. SERVICE PHOTO (R-12D-73-DS)

- Institutions face problems in New York.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45052 INSTITUTIONS FACE PROBLEMS IN NEW YORK NEW YORK -- The Jewish Theological Seminary of America's announcement that it is considering moving, perhaps outside New York City, focuses attention on Morningside Heights, an area of northern Manhattan with one of the heaviest concentrations of religious and educational institutions in the nation. Located within a few blocks of each other are Jewish Theological (1), Teachers' College (2), Columbia University (3), Barnard College (4), Union Theological Seminary (5), the Interchurch Center (6), Riverside Church (7) and the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Divine (8). The area is bounded on the east by Morningside Park (right) and on the west by the Hudson River. One pressing problem for the Jewish Theological Seminary and the other institutions is the need for more space. The seminary owns two partly empty apartment buildings which it wants to raze for a new structure. Legal snags, including tenant attempts to prohibit the razing of the buildings, have delayed construction for some nine years. Columbia and St. John the Divine faced similar problems in the past when they attempted to expand. Another issue in Morningside Heights is safety on the streets. There has been a rash of assaults in the area; last year a Columbia professor was killed less than a block from Jewish Theological Seminary. Employees of the Interchurch Center are warned not to go out alone at noon because of the high rate of muggings and stabbings in Morningside Heights. Members of the group held placards proclaiming the Comet Kohoutek as a sign of the impending judgment of God. Kohoutek has taken on religious significance among some fundamentalist groups. The so-called "Christmas comet" is seen by some as a possible sign of the Second Coming of Christ, while others interpret it as a warning of impending doom.
