- Church for deaf is dedicated.
- Description
- With complete services conducted in "sign language," the Baptist Church for the Deaf was dedicated yesterday before an audience of nearly all deaf mutes. - Priest gets 'self-imposed' exile.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31980 PRIEST GETS 'SELF-IMPOSED' EXILE LOS ANGELES- Father John V. Coffield, pastor of Ascension church in Los Angeles, has requested--and been granted-- a "self-imposed exile" in Chicago for an indefinite period. He is shown here with Father Juan Soto (left) and a group of parishioners, most of whom are Latin Americans and Negroes. Father Coffield, in announcing the exile, claimed he had been forbidden to preach out against racial problems by James Francis Cardinal McIntyre, Archbishop of Los Anegeles. He said he preferred the exile to maintaining "silence on racism," and as a solution to "an impasse between my cardinal and myself." Father Coffield also claimed he had been given an "enforced vacation of five months" from June to November after he had spoken out against a state proposition nullifying anti-discrimination laws in housing, later approved by voters. He is shown speaking to some 47,655 persons, the largest single audience of the crusade so far. Later, crusade officials said that the first eight rallies drew a total attendance of 298,062 persons, with 13,000 making “decisions for Christ” at the famed evangelist’s invitation. Special “Youth Nights,” held specifically for young people under 25, have drawn huge crowds, officials reported. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CNB-MINN-8E-63-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-29745 BILLY GRAHAM AT LOS ANGELES CRUSADE LOS ANGELES, Cal. -- Evangelist Billy Graham (on platform center) addresses some 38,700 persons in Los Angeles’ Memorial Coliseum as he opens a three-week Southern California Crusade. On the first night the famed evangelist drew 1,514 “decisions for Christ.” Attendance on the second rally was reported at 31,254, with 1,154 decisions. In his first sermons, Dr. Graham deplored the “trend to take God and moral law out of our schools,” and warned that today’s society was entering the “age of the shrug” concerning vital issues, with most people seeking only “escapism.” The Baptist minister’s crusade was being held not far from the spot where he first gained repute as an evangelist at a Los Angeles tent crusade 14 years ago. Since then he has preached to some 30 million people on five continents. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RNS-8D-63-NAB)

- Bus solves evangelists' housing shortage.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: BUS SOLVES EVANGELISTS’ HOUSING SHORTAGE #s3519 LOS ANGELES -- Ten members of the Libbey family, touring evangelists, are shown on the “back porch” of their rolling home. They travel from state to state presenting programs of religious music in different churches. The entire family is musical, including 82-year-old Grandfather, who plays the drums. The bus was bought five years ago after being honorably retired by the Los Angeles transportation system. It has been converted into living quarters by installing Pullman-style berths in the lower deck that fold out of the ceiling. When the berths come down, curtains automatically fall over the windows. The upper deck is used to store musical instruments and for cooking and eating when the weather is fine. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (ANH-LA-MES-5B-6-W)
