- But the Time Came--After long years of petty restrictions on the activities and service of the church's women, the time came when most of these were removed. This 1940 picture of the Woman's Advisory Committee shows leaders of the work in more or less the heyday of "women's work." - Text transcribed from caption: Robert Hosack's family wedding. We remarked at the close of last year's letter that we presumed the 1972 elections told us something, though we were not crystal clear on exactly what. We still aren't perfectly clear, but the clearer, the worser. In both national and international affairs, it would seem that 1973 has been under the Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times." Let us hope that 1974 will lean to the dull side of history.\n\nIn the annals of the Hosack clan, the year had much to commend it. We were fortunate enough to have the whole family home for Christmas, and Charles brought Kathy Jacobsen to share his short visit, so we became better acquainted with her. They left on Christmas afternoon and the Reynolds and Oshri flew from Spokane a day or two later, but Harriet and David remained for a gratifying two weeks. David will presumably be a chef; he spent much of the vacation "cooking" on a large cardboard box with a varied assortment of cans and pans.\n\nOur Ethiopian student, Shifferaw Encubahry, annexed his master's degree at the close of the school year, and we dropped him at his brother's dormitory door in Portland in midJune. He has had bad luck--several near-serious injuries at a heavy industry job which he abandoned while he could still walk away--and since then he has been jobless. He hopes for a part-time teaching position at Portland Community College. Through him, in roundabout fashion, we have learned that Ayalneh has returned to Ethiopia.\n\nOur Chinese family, with two fast-growing sons, are quite crowded in their trailer-park quarters. Mrs. Chou senior was with them much of the year and her departure has increased the space but also reduced Connie's number of employable hours. Hans is doing well at the university, but it has not been an easy year.\n\nTime has moved rapidly along. In February, Nancy attended the League (of Women Voters) Day at the Legislature in Boise, and visited Charles in a small row-apartment strikingly furnished with a bedroom set and an electric organ belonging to Kathy, two spare tires, a bicycle, a portable TV, a dinette set, a borrowed mattress, and assorted cartons. Bob made a trip to Portland in March, and both parents descended on Charles for a couple of days in May. Aside from these wanderings, the Moscow Hosacks remained at home, involved in university classes and committees, the Moscow Board of Adjustment, church work, city council
