Protestant and Catholic churchmen, following two nights of violence, patrolled streets in an effort to curb further outbreaks and presented a program designed for racial peace, to the city's mayor. One priest, who helped rescue a stranded white motorist from a mob, noted that his cassock was drenched with blood after he assisted some of the injured in one melee. - Description

Edison called it an “electrolier” and in 1883 donated it to First Presbyterian church of Roselle, N.J., after convincing its pastor that it would not be “sacrilegious” to have electric lights in the sanctuary. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-32234 ASH WEDNESDAY ON COMMUTER TRAIN HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The benediction is pronounced as Lackawanna Train 606 pulls into Hoboken, N.J. Commuters bound for New York sat with bared heads as the Rev. Craig Biddle III, curate of St. Peter’s Episcopal church, Morristown, N.J., held a 20-minute service on Ash Wednesday. The mobile worship experience, he told the smoking-car congregation, was not an attempt “to play church or perform an experiment -- this service is basically taking the ritual of the commuter and adding it to the liturgy of the church.” Many of the commuters were enthusiastic about the service and expressed home they would be continued. - Jeweled cross by Dali.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31996 JEWELED CROSS BY DALI NEWARK, N.J. -- This unusual jeweled “Angel Cross” was one of about 30 artistic creations by Salvador Dali displayed in a Newark, N.J., department store for charity. The Dali exhibition of works of art in gems and precious metals was valued at about $2 million. This cross, 30 inches high, rests on a crystalized zinc sulphite base, in which are embedded 12 diamond-encrusted spines, a symbol of the Twelve Apostles. Used in creating the cross were diamonds, platinum, gold, lapis lazuli from Russia, and rare dark coral from China. It also had a flawless topaz from Brazil weighing 1,687 karats, which represents the door of the Tabernacle and the Gate of Heaven. - Priests abused by bank truck robbers.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31964 PRIESTS ABUSED BY BANK TRUCK ROBBERS PATERSON, N.J. -- Three of four priests who were bound and gagged by bank trunk robbers at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic church in Paterson, N.J., discuss the harrowing experience. From left to right are Father James Di Vita, Father Italio Giovanni and Father Philip Pascucci. The priests -- and Father Cassian J. Kirk -- were held at bay in the church rectory by three armed men wearing Halloween masks who ambushed an armored truck as it arrived to pick up church collections. Two truck guards also were seized as the bandits looted the truck and got away with $511,000, one of the largest cash thefts in history. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31662 DRIVE UNDERWAY TO RESTORE BUDDHIST TEMPLE FREEWOOD ACRES, N.J. -- A nationwide drive to obtain $180,000 for the reconstruction of the Golden Pavilion Temple, striking example of Chinese-Tibetan architecture, has been launched at Freewood Acres, N.J. The structure, originally built in China as a reproduction of the Chinese Emperor’s temple, was erected for the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933 and since then has been disassembled and in storage. Lowell Thomas, noted explorer and commentator, is heading the campaign to reconstruct the temple for the Kalmuk community of Lamaistic Buddhists at Farmingdale, N.J. About 1,000 Kalmuks who fled from Communists in Tibet have settled in New Jersey. Descendants of the Mongol Emperor Kubla Khan, the Kalmuks’ spiritual leader is the Dalai Lama. A Knights of Columbus Council at Carlstadt, N.J., places pennants such as these, upon permission of proprietors, in public places throughout the communities it serves. The Knights’ concern was spurred by a pending U.S. Supreme Court case in which use of “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance has been contested. Here, Michael Dowling of Dumont, a representative of St. Francis of Assisi Council No. 4524, places a pennant upholding the U.S. recognition of God.
