- Pope receives Denmark's royal family.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30920 POPE RECEIVES DENMARK’S ROYAL FAMILY VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI accepts a silver bowl and cup presented to him by King Frederik and Queen Ingrid of Denmark during an official visit to the pontiff. With them is the royal couple’s daughter, Princess Benedikte (left). The historic and ecumenical visit marked the first time in more than 40 years that a monarch from predominantly Lutheran Denmark has been received by a Pope. Paul VI gave the King a copy of the code of Ambrosiaster (the name given to the author of a commentary on all the Epistles of St. Paul), medals of his pontificate, and an autographed, silver-framed photograph of himself. The pontiff told the royal visitors in English that the audience was an “historic event” which “touches us deeply.” In his remarks to the pontiff, King Frederik cited the cordial relations between Catholics and Protestants in his country. - Pope visits prison, says Mass.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30854 POPE VISITS PRISON, SAYS MASS ROME -- Pope Paul VI speaks to about 1,200 inmates on a visit to Regina Coeli (Queen of Heaven) prison in Rome where he celebrated a Mass for them. Some prisoners kneel near the Pope as he talks, while others look down from corridors overlooking the jail’s rotunda. The pontiff was warmly greeted and applauded by the prisoners, many of whom wept. He told them: “You want freedom, welfare, and I feel powerless to give you these things you want so much.” The inmates later joined the Pope in reciting the Our Father and the Hail Mary. Pope Paul repeatedly blessed the prisoners around him and before leaving distributed gifts to all. He was the second pontiff to visit the penal institution which includes men convicted of manslaughter, armed robbery and kidnapping. The first Pope to visit the jail was the late John XXIII in 1958. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30845 KHRUSHCHEV AND CLERGYMAN BUDAPEST -- A rare picture: Nikita Khrushchev (back to camera, left) shakes hands with an unidentified clergyman, described only as “a priest,” at a reception in Budapest. At right is Hungarian Premier Janos Kadar. The picture was taken at a time when the USSR had accelerated its atheistic indoctrination program and the Hungarian Communist regime’s relations with the Roman Catholic Church were reported somewhat improved. The Soviet Premier’s visit, marked by his most outspoken attack on Red Chinese militarism, was notable for many rumors, among them one which foresaw withdrawal of remaining Russian forces from Hungary. It also spurred renewed reports that Joszef Cardinal Mindszenty would be permitted by the regime to leave the U.S. legation at Budapest, where he has taken refuge since the abortive Freedom Fighters’ revolt of 1956. - Pieta leaves Vatican for fair.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30830 PIETA LEAVES VATICAN FOR FAIR VATICAN CITY -- Securely anchored to an open truck, Michelangelo’s priceless sculpture, Pieta, leaves St. Peter’s Basilica (background) for Naples on the first leg of its trip to the New York World’s Fair. In Naples the crate, weighing a total of about six tons, was to be fastened to the deck of the Cristoforo Colombo for its ocean voyage. Insured for $6,000,000, the statue of the Virgin and the Crucified Christ, was packed with asbestos and plastic materials in a wooden crate. The inner box was then placed in an outer steel case. It was addressed to Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, president of the Vatican Pavilion where the famous work of art will be viewed by millions. The trip marks the first time the statue left its permanent place in St. Peter’s in more than 450 years. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (K-4B-64-NAB)

Top photo shows Jozef Cardinal Frings, Archbishop of Cologne, and 20 priests with whom he concelebrated the Mass. Photo below shows the closing rally in which 200,000 persons gathered in a demonstration of religious unity. The rally featured a Bible-centered "Word of God" service. To emphasize Scripture as a "pillar of fair," a Bible was placed on an elevated platform, flanked by a huge Crucifix. Prayers were said not only for the Church but for all non-Catholic Christians. Another Mass also was concelebrated on the closing day by Archbishop Corrado Bafile, Papal Nuncio to Germany, and 20 other clergy. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (KV-BER-9B-64-NAB)

On either side of the pontiff are some of the 2, 300 Fathers of the Vatican Council who participated in the services. Flown to Greece, the relic -- skull of the Apostle -- was escorted by a delegation headed by Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity. On its arrival, the relic and its escorts received a warm welcome from Metropolitan Constantine of Patras, in whose diocesan cathedral the skull will be enshrined. After some 500 years in the St. Peter's grottoes, the relic was returned to the Orthodox by the Pope as a gesture of "brotherly love." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-9E-64-NAB)

The pontiff disclosed that among questions discussed in his encyclical will be peace and the relationship between Christian and economic life. He said it also will deal with the "dialogue of the Church with the world of the non-Christian religions and with the choir of the Christian Churches still separated from the Catholic Church." The encyclical would not contain specific theological or doctrinal points, he said, and will be of an "exhortative" nature.
