- Refugee cross.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46002 REFUGEE CROSS GENEVA -- The United Nations High commissioner for Refugees, Sadruddin Aga Khan, receives a sculpture of Christ on the cross from Guido Rocha (left), an artist who is a refugee from both Brazil and Chile. The sculptor made the crucifix in his native Brazil and took it with him when he became a refugee in Santiago, Chile. When the military took control of Chile in September 1973, Mr. Rocha and other political refugees stayed in one of several “safe havens” set up by the High Commissioner’s office and Chilean churches to provide protection for those obliged to leave Chile following the military coup. The artist and a group of refugees had originally presented the crucifix, to which they had added a plaque dedicating it to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees office and to all political prisoners in Chile, to the office’s representative in Latin America. Sent to Geneva, it was forgotten until recently by officials whose main concern was organizing an emergency resettlement program for the more than 2,600 persons obliged to leave Chile. While giving the cross to the High Commissioner at the latter’s Geneva’s headquarters, Mr. Rocha, now a student at Geneva’s School of Fine Arts, said the double presentation -- in Santiago and in Geneva -- gave added significance to the gesture as the fight for the respect of basic human rights and the protection of refugees goes on around the world. - "Crucifixion of man."
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46504 ‘CRUCIFIXION OF MAN’ GENEVA -- In a Geneva studio, Guido Rocha works on his “Crucifixion of Man,” a work he says is based on the physical torture he suffered in the prisons of Brazil. Mr. Rocha was arrested for protesting against oppression, was tortured and then “acquitted.” He then fled to Chile where he was caught up in the military coup that overthrew the government of Marxist President Salvador Allende in Sept. 1973. Again arrested, he spent 40 days in detention at Santiago’s National Stadium before being released and admitted to Switzerland as a political refugee. A special scholarship to the School of Fine Arts in Geneva has enabled him to work on his “Crucifixion of Man.” When it is finished, Mr. Rocha intends to present it to the World Council of Churches as his way of thanking the churches for their assistance to Chilean refugees.
