- Episcopal clergyman ends long civil rights fast.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31012 EPISCOPAL CLERGYMAN ENDS LONG CIVIL RIGHTS FAST CHESTER, Pa. -- The Rev. Clayton K. Hewett, 30 pounds lighter after an 18-day hunger strike in protest to racial segregation in schools at Chester, Pa., smiles at the youngest of his six children. Six-month-old Maria Theresa is held by another daughter, Darrale Jeanne, 13. Mrs. Hewett is at right. The clergyman, with one arm in a sling, ended his fast after Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton launched an effort to solve the Chester school segregation problem. He was arrested on several charges during a protest demonstration and after 10 days in jail, the last three in “complete fast” without liquids, was hospitalized. For the last eight days he continued his protest, accepting only juice and vitamins. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-5C-64-NBM)

- Hunger strike for civil rights.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30988 HUNGER STRIKE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS MEDIA, Pa. -- The Rev. Clayton K. Hewett, Episcopal clergyman of Morton, Pa., takes part in a healing service of Holy Unction from his cot in a county jail annex at Media, Pa. The clergyman went on a prolonged hunger strike to protest racial segregation in public schools after he was arrested in demonstrations at Chester, Pa. The service is conducted by another Episcopal clergyman, the Rev. John Black of Philadelphia. After nearly two weeks -- the last few days during which Mr. Hewett went into a “complete fast,” without food or liquid -- physicians ordered his transfer to a hospital in Chester. The clergyman’s wife, who said she and their six children “think he’s 100 per cent correct,” said his state of dehydration made it necessary to administer liquids intravenously in the hospital, though he was continuing to refuse solids. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30897 ELECTRONICS HELP THE HANDICAPPED PITTSBURGH -- Tape rec orders, hearing aids and other electronic equipment are used extensively by Sisters of Charity and lay teachers in educating handicapped students at the De Paul Institute in Pittsburg. Five hundred students, from 2 to 18 years of age, are either partially or wholly blind or deaf or have serious speech defects. In this photo Sister Angelica cuts a lacquer record as Tommy Burgunder, 12, follows the recording playing by a tape cartridge recorder against the text in his Braille text book. “Our students like to make recordings in class,” the nun says, “and the enjoyment they derive acts as a powerful incentive to learning.” The school charges no tuition and accepts students regardless of race or religion. They are shown with nun-members of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission -- Sister Edward Mary (left), and Sister Kevin. After the Liturgical Day, the Lutheran observers commented on parallels they found between Protestant and Catholic renewal. They cited the "sense of mission" being instilled in youth and the effort to get away from "the Sunday kind of faith" toward an everyday living of religion. - Protests 'Permissive' Bible-reading in school.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30648 PROTESTS 'PERMISSIVE' BIBLE-READING IN SCHOOL LEWISBURG, Pa. -- James Snavely, plaintiff in the suit against "permissive Bible reading" in the Cornwall-Lebanon School District in Pennsylvania, checks notes with his wife Mary and children, Victoria and Eric. Describing himself as "a religious man," Mr. Snavely held it immoral for the school board to defy the U.S. Supreme Court decision against devotional practices in public schools. Just before the suit was to be called for a hearing, the school board reversed its decision and said it would instead order use of the Bible "as literature and history." The American Civil Liberties Union said it would oppose the new program as devised by the board. Shortly after Mr. Snavely filed suit, he was arrested in the middle of the night and fined $53 for failure to license his dogs in 1962. When the United Churches of Greeter Harrisburg protested the police action, an investigation of the alleged intimidation and harassment was ordered. Many family teams -- as this father-son combination -- take part in the regular painting and sketching sessions. And as the work is produced, it has been noted by the Rev. Daniel D. Oravec, pastor of the Lutheran Church in America congregation, discussion of man's creative nature often leads to discussion and study of spiritual subjects. But even without this, Mr. Oravec said, the church painting club is filling a need through providing an outlet for artistic urges. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (WRD-Pa.-2C-64-NBM)
