- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-3926 LIFE IN A CAPUCHIN MONASTERY [1] STAUNTON, Va. -- The rapid pace of the Twentieth Century gives way to study, mediation, prayer and work at Our Lady of Angels Capuchin monastery here. The basis of living is reduced to its essentials, as shown in this photo of the plainly-set table at meal time. Seating at long wooden tables is arranged by rank. Much modern equipment has been installed in the monastery and its grounds. Cells are equipped with hot and cold water, and tilling of the soil is done by power-driven plows. Students do most of work, and the building contains carpenter, cobbler, pressing and tailor shops. (One of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AC-RICH-VA-MES-6B-6-C-R)

However all is not done without recreation, as this picture shows. Longest period of relaxation is the hour after night prayers when the 24 students and six priest-teachers play cards, read and listen to the radio or play table tennis. Members of the order may leave the grounds of the monastery only on Thursday, except on monastery business or to visit the doctor or dentist. Off the grounds they dress in black suits. It was built after the Civil War to honor men of Akron who died in that conflict, but with the passage of time its significance was lost. Judge Arthur W. Doyle, who is leading the drive to restore the chapel, wants the campaign to be backed by the entire community, with the chapel to be placed under the trusteeship of a council composed of representatives from all active veterans groups. The Christian Church, always faced with gigantic tasks in the ancient land, is again showing the way. Here a Christian pastor is demonstrating to some of his farmer parishioners how to graft their fruit trees and thus increase their yield.
