- Monks use corn dehydrator.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: MONKS USE CORN DEHYDRATER [sic] #c-3344 DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Although their Cistercian rule is centuries-old, the monks of New Melleray Abbey near here employ twentieth century farming methods. Here Father Vincent Daly, O.C.S.O., Prior of the abbey, tests with a thermometer the heat control of the corn dehydrator on the abbey farm. The dehydrator is used to prepare corn that is not dry enough to be stored in cribs. It utilizes a fan to suck air from a kerosene flame, blowing it through a pipe into the open corn crib at the rate of 700 cubic feet a minute at 250 degrees temperature. The moisture in the corn is thus driven off in the form of a cloud of steam. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AS-DUB-MES-4D-6-C)

- Seeks guarantees for Christians in Lebanon.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: SEEKS GUARANTEES FOR CHRISTIANS IN LEBANON #c-3685 PITTSBURGH -- Christians in Lebanon want a United National guarantee of religious freedom, according to the Rt. Rev. Chor-Bishop Antoun Akl, a high dignitary of the Maronite (Eastern Rite) Catholic Church shown here (right) with the Rev. Elias Basil, pastor of St. Anne’s Syro-Maronite Catholic church. According to Bishop Akl, the Christians in Lebanon, only country in the Levant not dominated by Moslems, fear a pan-Arabic union. This would leave Lebanon Christians isolated in a Moslem world, Bishop Akl says, and they feel their religious liberties might be curtailed in such a situation. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: BUS SOLVES EVANGELISTS’ HOUSING SHORTAGE #s3519 LOS ANGELES -- Ten members of the Libbey family, touring evangelists, are shown on the “back porch” of their rolling home. They travel from state to state presenting programs of religious music in different churches. The entire family is musical, including 82-year-old Grandfather, who plays the drums. The bus was bought five years ago after being honorably retired by the Los Angeles transportation system. It has been converted into living quarters by installing Pullman-style berths in the lower deck that fold out of the ceiling. When the berths come down, curtains automatically fall over the windows. The upper deck is used to store musical instruments and for cooking and eating when the weather is fine. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (ANH-LA-MES-5B-6-W)

- Tokyo Christian Fellowship.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: TOKYO CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP #3339 TOKYO -- One of the best-organized bodies of its kind in the Orient is the Christian Fellowship Group here. Composed of Japanese Christians, American and British servicemen, and missionaries, it was started last October. President of the Fellowship is Miss Kiku Ishihara, a graduate of Columbia University, New York, who now is head of a Christian elementary school here. The Fellowship holds mid-weekly meetings as well as Sunday services. Recently the group donated 5,000 yen to sponsor medical aid for Japanese war orphans. And it also provides funds for the support of Japanese ministers and the Japan Biblical Seminary. Here a hospital visiting team of the group is gathered before setting out on a weekly visit to a nearby hospital. (One of a Series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE (JON-TOK-MES-5C-6-R-M-O)

- Clergyman dies in civil rights protest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30847 CLERGYMAN DIES IN CIVIL RIGHTS PROTEST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The grim grin of shock spreads across the face of a civil rights demonstrator at the sight of a 26-year-old United Presbyterian clergyman’s dead body sprawled across the track of a bulldozer that ran over him at a Cleveland, Ohio, school construction site. The Rev. Bruce W. Klunder, a Student Christian Union leader on Cleveland area campuses, was killed as he threw himself onto the ground behind a bulldozer. Three other demonstrators had jumped in front of the bulldozer and it backed up over the minister. The operator of the machine said he didn’t know Mr. Klunder was in his path.
