KING ATLANTA -- Dr. Martin Luther King’s young daughter, Yolande, stands on tip-toe but isn’t quite tall enough to see over the table decorations as she tries to have a word with her parents. The occasion was a testimonial dinner for the noted Negro integration leader in recognition of his winning the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. The dinner was attended by a sell-out audience of 1,500 guests, about half of them white. It was sponsored by about 100 leading religious and civic residents of Atlanta, where Dr. King was born and where he is co-pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist church. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32166 ACTOR CHARGED WITH VATICAN BOMBING VATICAN CITY -- Charged by Italian police with the bombing of a Vatican entrance was actor Claudio Volonte, 26, shown wearing a beard for a role in “The Deputy.” He is a brother of actor-producer Gian Maria Volonte, who tried to stage the controversial play in the basement of a deconsecrated Rome church. The drama, which depicts Pope Pius XII as failing to denounce publicly Nazi anti-Jewish crimes, was banned by the Rome Prefecture under the Vatican-Italy concordat which protects the “sacred character” of the Eternal City. The explosion at the Vatican Gate of Santanna on the Via di Porta Angelica injured no one, but caused some damage to buildings and windows. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32068 CIRCUS CHILDREN VISIT POPE VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI greets children of the “heroes of the impossible,” his description of circus performers. The youngsters were invited to the Pope’s side after he had completed a talk before an American circus troupe. The pontiff said circus people “brighten the lives” of audiences and urged the performers to “fulfill the obligations of your profession in a Christian way.” As the photograph was taken one child was overwhelmed by the audience and burst into tears. - Selma march underway at long last.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32321 SELMA MARCH UNDERWAY AT LONG LAST SELMA, Ala. -- This aerial view shows a half-mile long column of civil rights demonstrators -- including many clergy -- on the first leg of a 50-mile march to Montgomery, the state capital, in support of the Negro voter registration drive. The marchers -- an estimate 3,500 left Selma -- are shown crossing the Pettus Bridge, where the first scheduled freedom march was broken up by state troopers on Sunday, March 7. This time, the march was authorized by a federal court and was protected by Army and federalized Alabama National Guard troops. Leading the walk was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which has been spearheading the long registration effort. At the end of the five-day march along U.S. Highway 80, Negro leaders hoped to present a civil rights petition to Gov. George C. Wallace, who earlier declined to protect the demonstrators.
