Statesmen from 15 nations -- including three so-called Iron Curtain countries -- participated in the convocation that marked the 20th anniversary of the United Nations. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-32170 COMMUNIST THEORETICIAN ADDRESSES PEACE CONVOCATION NEW YORK -- The Soviet people “would be most favorably disposed to any negotiations for peace,” a leading Communist theoretician told the international Pacem in Terris Convocation in New York. Addressing the more than 1,500 religious leaders, government figures and political and social scientists is Nicolai N. Inozemstev, theoretical adviser to the Central Committee of the Communist Party in the USSR and deputy chief editor of Pravda. The Russian people, he said, support the general tone of Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth), the last encyclical by the late Pope John XXIII and the convocation’s basic document. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-32167 PACEM IN TERRIS CONVOCATION HEARS VICE PRESIDENT NEW YORK -- Ceremonies opening the international Pacem in Terris Convocation to examine requirements for peace featured an address by Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey before some 2,200 religious leaders, noted government figures and political and social scientists at the United Nations. The convocation, arranged by the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, honored the memory of the late Pope John XXIII and used his last encyclical as its basic document. Listening to the Vice President in the U.N. General Assembly hall, from left to right, are: Paul G. Hoffman, director of the U.N. - Text transcribed from caption: P-32226 TWO-WAY PHONES CONNECT FUND DINNERS NEW YORK -- Dr. Franklin Clark Fry, president of the Lutheran Church in America, makes telephone contact with one of nine simultaneous dinners held in as many cities to open an $8 million fund campaign for relocation of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in downtown Philadelphia. Dr. Fry and Dr. Donald R. Heiges (center), president of the seminary, addressed the nine dinners from New York via the phone hookup. At right is Dr. Gunnar Knudsen of Reading, Pa., chairman of the board for the seminary. The board voted early in February to relocate the seminary, now in the Mt. - Text transcribed from caption: C-32141 CYO CITES BOB HOPE NEW YORK -- Bob Hope, noted TV comedian (right), receives the 1964 Club of Champions Medal presented by the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) of New York for “dedication and service to the youth of America and particularly to the U.S. armed forces.” Presentation was made by Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, at the CYO’s annual dinner. Shown with them is J. Peter Grace, CYO president. The citation to Mr. Hope noted that he has made annual Christmas tours of military bases overseas with an entertainment group. He was in South Vietnam at Christmas. The irrepressible comedian told the audience Cardinal Spellman had visited all the fighting fronts -- “Korea, South Vietnam…and the World’s Fair.” He added that he appreciated the friendship and goodwill of Catholics -- “I have to do a lot of flying…and they’ve got good connections.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-2B-65-NAB)
