Bishop Gran, 44, was the first bishop consecrated in Norway since 1525. He also was the first Trappist priest to become a bishop since Auxiliary Bishop Augustus Marre of Rheims, France, in the early part of this century. Bishop Gran, a convert to Catholicism, will automatically succeed Bishop James Mangers as head of the Oslo diocese with includes all of predominantly Lutheran Norway. - Communion for retarded child.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31020 COMMUNION FOR RETARDED CHILD BRAINTREE, Mass. -- A mentally retarded child receives her First Communion. Father Mark E. Breheny, shown here, distributed Communion to a class of six at St. Coletta School for mentally retarded children, Braintree, Mass. The day school chaplain was assisted by two altar boys, similarly retarded. Traditionally the Catholic Church allows mentally retarded youngsters “with the use of reason” to receive the Sacrament. Father Robert McCall, S.J., of Weston (Mass.) College, recently proposed that all such children (with or without “reason”) be permitted to receive Communion. - Cardinal visits Soldiers Home.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30812 CARDINAL VISITS SOLDIERS HOME CHELSEA, Mass. -- Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, while visiting war veterans at the Soldiers Home in Chelsea borrowed an expression from his Irish ancestors and “took to the bed.” Touring the hospital wards, the cardinal spied an empty bed and promptly climbed into it. He quipped as the patients roared with laughter: “I belong here and I may stay the night.” While on his rounds, Cardinal Cushing stopped to sing a duet with 72-year-old Jacob Mulsman, a Jewish veteran of World War I. “I’m celebrating Passover with the best Jew in Massachusetts,” the prelate remarked.
