- Chapel sought as veterans’ monument.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: 3817 CHAPEL SOUGHT AS VETERANS’ MONUMENT [2] AKRON, Ohio -- Members of a local veterans’ committee inspect the 70-year-old chapel in Glendale Cemetery here which they are seeking to have redirected as a memorial to Akron’s dead of all wars. It was built after the Civil War to honor men of Akron who died in that conflict, but with the passage of time its significance was lost. Judge Arthur W. Doyle, who is leading the drive to restore the chapel, wants the campaign to be backed by the entire community, with the chapel to be placed under the trusteeship of a council composed of representatives from all active veterans groups. - Chaplains pray to St. Frances Xavier Cabrini.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: #C-4562 CHAPLAINS PRAY TO ST. FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI CHICAGO -- Roman Catholic chaplains of World War II ascend the altar at Soldiers Field, here, to offer special prayers to St. Frances Xavier Cabrini before an illuminated 75-foot portrait of the recently canonized saint. The procession was one of many that featured a colorful religious pageant sponsored by the Holy Name Union of the archdiocese of Chicago, to pay homage to the Italian-born nun who became America's first saint. Later the crowd of 100,000 who filled the huge amphitheater heard Samuel Cardinal Stritch, Archbishop of Chicago, laud the virtues of Mother Cabrini. - Text transcribed from caption: #C-4563 100,000 JAM SOLDIERS FIELD TO HONOR SAINT CHICAGO -- A huge throng of 100,000 participants stand solemnly to view a giant processional, that included 1,000 priests led by Samuel Cardinal Stritch, Archbishop of Chicago, wind its way around brightly-lit Soldiers Field, during a colorful religious drama held here to celebrate the recent canonization of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. The pageant, sponsored by the Holy Name Union of the archdiocese of Chicago, also featured a living portrayal of the map of the United States with several girls dressed as Mother Cabrini and nuns of her order moving from place to place, dramatizing the way she traveled extensively in pursuit of her labors. Another group of 2,000 girls portrayed a living rosary. Cardinal Stritch, speaking from an altar dominated by a 75-foot painting of Mother Cabrini, lauded the virtues of the Italian-born nun who became the first American saint.
