- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30438 POPE AND PATRIARCH JERUSALEM, Jordan -- Christian history is made in the Holy Land as Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras of the Eastern Orthodox Church and Pope Paul VI meet in Jerusalem. Their conversation at the residence of the Roman Catholic Apostolic Delegate to Jordan was the first between a Pope and a supreme leader of Orthodoxy in 525 years. A second meeting saw Pope Paul call upon the Patriarch at the Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem; there, accompanied by Orthodox and Roman Catholic prelates, they prayed for Christian unity. The pontiff visited the Armenian prelate upon completing his conversation with Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras. - Text transcribed from caption: C-30454 POPE ASSURES U.S. PRIEST OF AID TO REFUGEES JERUSALEM, Jordan -- Pope Paul VI is shown as he assured an American priest of Vatican financial assistance in alleviating the plight of Arab refugees in the Holy Land. Msgr. Joseph T. Ryan of New York (center), only U.S. priest to accompany the pontiff on his pilgrimage, is president of the Pontifical Mission for Palestine. At right is Father Denis Mooney, O.F.M., field director for the Pontifical Mission. Pope Paul later gave $10,000 toward the work. Msgr. Ryan is a native of Albany, N.Y. - Text transcribed from caption: C-30468 POPE COMFORTS CRIPPLED BOY JERUSALEM -- Five-year-old Samir Najjar, Arab polio victim, smiles contentedly in the arms of Pope Paul VI who, after hearing that the boy had waited for hours for a glimpse of him during his Holy Land pilgrimage, had him brought to the Apostolic Delegation in Jerusalem. The pope asked the parents about the treatment the child was getting and if they needed help. He then beckoned to an aide, who gave him the equivalent of $250 which he placed in the youngster’s hand. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30611 NEW YORK CHURCHMAN TOURS HOLY LAND JERUSALEM -- Greetings from New York Protestants were carried to the Middle East and Western Europe by Dr. Dan M. Potter, director of the Protestant Council of the City of New York, and Mrs. Potter. Their tour included meetings with Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, supreme leader of Eastern Orthodoxy, at Istanbul, and an audience with Pope Paul VI at the Vatican. In the Holy Land, Dr. And Mrs. Potter delivered specially inscribed greetings to Greek Orthodox Patriarch Benedictos of Jerusalem, President S.Z. Shazar of Israel (top center) and King Hussein of Jordan (bottom center). Their tour of shrines included a visit to the Benedictine Abbey of the Dormition (right) on Mt. Zion, near the traditional site of the room of the Last Supper. Dr. Potter also planted a sapling (left) at a special center in Sanhedria, site of the mass tombs of the Sanhedrin, the Rabbinical Courts of ancient Israel. - Text transcribed from caption: C-30562 POPE'S BROTHER, FRIEND AT MEMORIAL JERUSALEM -- The elder brother of Pope Paul VI lights candles in memory of 6 million Jews slain by the Nazi regime, Sen. Lodovico Montini is shown at the "Chamber of Destruction" on Mount Zion, Jerusalem, during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Watching at right is Dr. Meir Mendes, deputy director of the Israel Department of Christian Communities in the Ministry of Religions. The Montini-Mendes families have been close since 1939 when Pope Paul (then Msgr. Giovanni Battista Montini, Pro-Secretary of State) succeeded in saving the distinguished Roman Jewish family from Fascist antisemitic persecution. Through his efforts, the family found safety in Palestine. Dr. Mendes' father, Guido, now 87, was a schoolmate of Eugenio Pacelli, who went on to become Pope Pius XII. Scenes like this will be duplicated this Christmas as Catholics and other Christians observe the birth of Christ. Photo shows interior of the Benedictine Abbey of the Dormition on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. The church’s crypt has a monument marking the site where, according to tradition, the Blessed Virgin “fell asleep” and was assumed into heaven.
