Hermon Baptist church -- made from 5,000 cigarette packages -- to Mansfield Sheriff Thomas E. Weikel. Mr. Jones made the model during an eight-month sentence for violation of probation. - Church has electronic glass bells.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32066 For Release: Thurs., Jan. 21, or later CHURCH HAS ELECTRONIC GLASS BELLS DEDHAM, Mass. -- An electronic system of glass bells has been installed in St. Susanna Catholic church in Dedham, Mass. They were invented by Gerhard B. Finkenbeiner, shown here in his Brandeis University laboratories. The four-bell chime is encased in what appears to be radio tubes and housed in a metal cabinet two feet long with a total weight of 40 pounds. Mr. Finkenbeiner says that the electronic system has the sound and clarity of 2,500-pound church bells cast in bronze. The glass device is described as a significant advance over electronically amplified metal vibrators now in use in many churches. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CB-BOS-1C-65-NAB)

KING ATLANTA -- Dr. Martin Luther King’s young daughter, Yolande, stands on tip-toe but isn’t quite tall enough to see over the table decorations as she tries to have a word with her parents. The occasion was a testimonial dinner for the noted Negro integration leader in recognition of his winning the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. The dinner was attended by a sell-out audience of 1,500 guests, about half of them white. It was sponsored by about 100 leading religious and civic residents of Atlanta, where Dr. King was born and where he is co-pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist church. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-32234 ASH WEDNESDAY ON COMMUTER TRAIN HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The benediction is pronounced as Lackawanna Train 606 pulls into Hoboken, N.J. Commuters bound for New York sat with bared heads as the Rev. Craig Biddle III, curate of St. Peter’s Episcopal church, Morristown, N.J., held a 20-minute service on Ash Wednesday. The mobile worship experience, he told the smoking-car congregation, was not an attempt “to play church or perform an experiment -- this service is basically taking the ritual of the commuter and adding it to the liturgy of the church.” Many of the commuters were enthusiastic about the service and expressed home they would be continued.
