Sister Mary Julia (left) takes a playful bump and Mother Cecilia Mary (right) admires Twinkle's performance. "She does this just to tease me -- Twinkle is just a clown at heart," says Mother Cecilia, 75, who founded the shelter for stray and abandoned animals in 1922 as the Order of the Sisters of the Love of Jesus. She and five other nuns care for nearly 150 dogs, cats, goats and birds and currently are conducting a fund drive for $40,000 to build an animal hospital on the 23-acre site. - Punjab Sikhs form colorful colony.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PUNJAB SIKHS FORM COLORFUL COLONY #1544 VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Some 40 years ago pioneering Sikhs from Punjab came here and settled around Vancouver, New Westminster and Victoria. Although they have become successful businessmen and farmers, they have kept many of their Punjab ways, most evident of which is their religion. Founded 450 years ago by Nanak, a native of Lahore, the Sikhs have their own temple here, altar of which is shown above. Richly embroidered silk and satin with which it is covered is of great value and antiquity. Guards stand with drawn swords all during service. There are no seats in temple and participants sit on the floor. Like guards, they remove their shoes before entering place of worship. - Description

Ten swimmers dived into the lake to recover the religious article during the annual Festival of the Holy Cross. First to find it was Nicholas Apostolopoulos, 24, of Toronto. More than 5,000 persons, some from New York, were present at the traditional Greek ceremony which commemorates the Baptism of Christ. In Greece, the rite is usually held in January, but in North America the festival takes place during warmer months. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RL-TOR-9C-63-NAB)
