He brought with him the momentous announcement that the Vatican “greets with joy and fully accepts” the proposal approved by the WCC’s Central Committee to form a joint working group with the Catholic Church to explore aspects of cooperation and collaboration. Also welcomed at the historical occasion was Dr. Marc Boegner (right) of Paris, longtime ecumenical leader who once was a co-president of the WCC and now is honorary president of the French Protestant Federation. - Lapland church memorial to Hammarskjold.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31747 LAPLAND CHURCH MEMORIAL TO HAMMARSKJOLD LAPLAND -- A suggestion proposed by a Laplander mountain guide, Andreas Labba (top), has been realized in the form of a small church built in the wild northern Scandinavia country and dedicated to the memory of Dag Hammarskjold, Secretary-General of the United Nations who died in a plane crash in 1961. A friend and companion of the noted world figure on many hikes into the Lapland mountains, Mr. Labba traveled to Uppsala, Sweden, for Mr. Hammarskjold’s funeral and made his idea known. Institutions, firm and individuals -- mostly in Lapland -- responded with funds and the small church, built in the triangular form of a Lapp hut, was raised. Artistic silverwork, such as candlesticks and communion dishes, were given to the church by friends of Mr. Hammarskjold. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (2-NY-10-D-64-NBM)
