- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-299923 IN MEMORIAM: RED VESTMENTS FOR MARTYRS SAN FRANCISCO -- Typical of hundreds of churches across the United States was this scene in San Francisco. - Text transcribed from caption: C-32203 NEW CARDINAL PLEDGES OBEDIENCE VATICAN CITY -- Lawrence Cardinal Shehan, Archbishop of Baltimore, listens as Pope Paul VI reads the pledge of “loyalty, submission, obedience and perpetual collaboration” taken by the new cardinals at a public consistory. As the Pope read the pledge to the 26 new Princes of the Church present, each responded, “I promise.” The cardinal received their new scarlet birettas -- three-peaked clerical caps -- but the ritual of conferring the traditional galero, or Red Hat, was eliminated. The galeros, best known insignia of a cardinal, were delivered later to the prelates at their Rome residence. Cardinal Shehan was the only American prelate among the 27 new cardinals named by the Pope. One of them was not present at the public consistory, Angel Cardinal Herrera y Oria, Bishop of Malaga, Spain. He will receive his Red Hat from Generalissimo Franco. KING WINS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE ATLANTA, Ga. -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who has led the non-violent movement for civil rights in America for some ten years, was named to receive the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. The noted Baptist minister received the news from his wife by phone while at St. Joseph’s Infirmary, a Catholic hospital in Atlanta, where he had gone for a physical check-up. He said that “every penny” of the award money -- expected to be more than $54,000 -- would go for the civil rights movement. Dr. King is founder and president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, dedicated to promoting equal rights for all Negroes. He is the second American Negro and the youngest person -- at 35 -- to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In September, Dr. King was received by Pope Paul VI in private audience at the Vatican. - Pope greets Africans after canonization.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31734 POPE GREETS AFRICANS AFTER CANONIZATION VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI greets a group of Africans at a papal audience a day after solemnly canonizing 22 African martyrs of Uganda who died for their faith in the 19th Century. The pontiff is shown shaking hands with one of the Africans at the audience -- an unidentified Ugandan. All those received at the Vatican were among some 10,000 persons in St. Peter’s Basilica for the canonization rites. The martyrs were boys and men, from 14 to 50 years old, who were among the first converts of the White Fathers in Uganda. They were slain by King Mwanga for resisting his demands to renounce Christianity. Beatified in 1920, the Uganda martyrs now take their place with other Negro saints of the Church. Mr. Arafat, whose appearance spurred numerous protests, told the Assembly that his organization’s goal remained a Palestinian state that would include Moslems, Christians and Jews. Below, with Israeli chief delegate Yosef Tekoah at the podium preparing to deliver a rebuttal to Mr. Arafat, representatives of the PLO (left front) and members of Arab delegations walk out of the Assembly chamber. Mr. Tekoah said that a state such as proposed by Mr. Arafat would mean the destruction of Israel and the substitution of an Arab state.
