- Pope Paul VI's first year.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-3111 POPE PAUL VI’S FIRST YEAR (First of a Series of Two Panels) VATICAN CITY -- On June 19,1963, Giovanni Battista Cardinal Montini, Archbishop of Milan, was elected Pope and became the first pontiff in 350 years to take the name of Paul. Top row, left to right, shows the Pope’s coat of arms; the papal tiara being placed on his head by Alfred Cardinal Ottaviani during the coronation rites in St. Peter’s Basilica on June 30; his first visit outside of Vatican City -- the first of many he was to make in following the example of his predecessor, John XXIII; and Paul VI’s historic meeting with President John F. Kennedy (July 2). During that audience he praised Mr. Kennedy for his efforts for world peace and racial equality. On learning of the President’s assassination on Nov. 22, the pontiff broadcast a special message praying for the peace of his “elect soul” and lauding his devotion to “the great causes of humanity.” Bottom row, left to right; first picture shows Pope Paul at a special audience in October with Protestant, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican observers to the Second Vatican Council. Early in his reign he announced his decision to continue the Council inaugurated by John XXIII and stressed that Christian unity was one of his major concerns. Second picture was taken in November as he led some 180 members of the American hierarchy -- including Joseph Cardinal Ritte of St. Louis, Albert Cardinal Meyer of Chicago, James Francis Cardinal McIntyre of Los Angeles, and Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York -- in prayers for the success of the Council. This occurred shortly before Pope Paul formally ratified the epochal Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy which was approved by the Council Fathers at the close of the second session. The third picture was taken in January as the Pope left Rome for his momentous pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He became the first pontiff to ever to travel by air and the first since St. Peter to set foot on soil hallowed by the footsteps of Christ. - Robert Kennedy meets Polish cardinal.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31237 ROBERT KENNEDY MEETS POLISH CARDINAL CZESTOCHOWA, Poland -- U.S. Attorney General and Mrs. Robert F. Kennedy and their three oldest children are shown with Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski, Primate of Poland in the library of the famed Jasna Gora Monastery in Czestochowa. Behind them is the “Black Madonna” painting at Poland’s national Marian shrine. The children are from left, Kathleen, Bobby and Joseph. Mr. Kennedy and Cardinal Wyszynski, who was on a retreat at the monastery, had a lengthy conference, but topics discussed were not announced. Communist Poland gave no publicity to their meeting. Mr. Kennedy postponed for one day his return home in order to meet the cardinal. The Attorney General received a wild welcome from thousands of Poles at major cities he visited. - The Cushing story
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31209 THE CUSHING STORY: MISSIONS, ECUMENISM (Second of a Series of 2 Photo Layouts) BOSTON -- Foreign missions and ecumenism distinguish the 25-year episcopate of Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston. The “man of many hats” marked the 25th anniversary of his consecration on June 29. At top left, his mission zeal is epitomized by yet another hat, a “lluchu” given to him by Indians in Bolivia. Cardinal Cushing has been honored by two Popes for his foundation and maintenance of the Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle for Latin America. One hundred U.S. priests now serve areas long hit by a shortage of clergy, and the prelate, famed as a fund-raiser, supports their work at a cost of $1 million annually. At upper right, he is shown as he was embraced in 1947 by Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, supreme leader of Eastern Orthodoxy -- the patriarch was then Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in North and South America. Cardinal Cushing’s relations with the Orthodox and Protestants have spurred the ecumenical movement in the U.S.; in recent years he has preached or lectured before many non-Catholic groups. Below, left, he is shown with his old friend, Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, as they participated in an unprecedented Catholic-Protestant Colloquium at Harvard. With them are Dr. Nathan Pusey, Harvard’s president, and Dr. Samuel H. Miller, Dean of Harvard Divinity School and chairman of the Massachusetts Council of Churches’ Committee on Christian Unity.
