- New cardinal pledges obedience.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32203 NEW CARDINAL PLEDGES OBEDIENCE VATICAN CITY -- Lawrence Cardinal Shehan, Archbishop of Baltimore, listens as Pope Paul VI reads the pledge of “loyalty, submission, obedience and perpetual collaboration” taken by the new cardinals at a public consistory. As the Pope read the pledge to the 26 new Princes of the Church present, each responded, “I promise.” The cardinal received their new scarlet birettas -- three-peaked clerical caps -- but the ritual of conferring the traditional galero, or Red Hat, was eliminated. The galeros, best known insignia of a cardinal, were delivered later to the prelates at their Rome residence. Cardinal Shehan was the only American prelate among the 27 new cardinals named by the Pope. One of them was not present at the public consistory, Angel Cardinal Herrera y Oria, Bishop of Malaga, Spain. He will receive his Red Hat from Generalissimo Franco. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32155 POPE WELCOMES ORTHODOX DELEGATES VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI chats with Metropolitan Meliton of Heliopolis, one of two representatives of Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras of Istanbul received by the pontiff in a private talk. The other Eastern Orthodox leader was Metropolitan Chrysostom of Hydra, secretary of the Third Pan-Orthodox Conference held at Rhodes, Greece, last November. Metropolitan Meliton presided over the conference. Greeting the two Orthodox delegates as “dear brothers in Christ,” the Pope said their meeting was a “profoundly happy event.” The Rhodes conference authorized individual Orthodox Churches to continue exploration with the Catholic Church on means for establishing closer relations. It voted, however, to postpone any collective approach to Rome for unity talks until the end of the Vatican Council. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-2C-65-NAB)

- Pope greets Africans after canonization.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31734 POPE GREETS AFRICANS AFTER CANONIZATION VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI greets a group of Africans at a papal audience a day after solemnly canonizing 22 African martyrs of Uganda who died for their faith in the 19th Century. The pontiff is shown shaking hands with one of the Africans at the audience -- an unidentified Ugandan. All those received at the Vatican were among some 10,000 persons in St. Peter’s Basilica for the canonization rites. The martyrs were boys and men, from 14 to 50 years old, who were among the first converts of the White Fathers in Uganda. They were slain by King Mwanga for resisting his demands to renounce Christianity. Beatified in 1920, the Uganda martyrs now take their place with other Negro saints of the Church. PETER’S BASILICA - A NIGHT VIEW #1606 ROME -- St. Peter’s in Rome presents an inspiring picture on ceremonial occasions at night when its great dome and facade are illuminated by thousands of electric lights. The Cross of Michelangelo’s great dome rises to a height of 453 feet and can be clearly seen in this photograph. It is a landmark of the Holy City. To the left of the basilica is the Vatican Palace, the Pope’s residence, and headquarters of the Secretariat of State and other papal administrative offices and institutions. The palace contains numerous reception halls and museums where some of the world’s greatest art treasures are housed. One of its most beautiful features is the Sistine Chapel which is adorned with Michelangelo’s frescoes. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CP-NY-MES-1-6-C)
