- Jerusalem.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: JERUSALEM - THE HOLY CITY The Dome of the Rock #1232 The Dome of the Rock, or Kubbet es-Shakhra, is said by Arab historians to have been built in the 7th century by ‘Abd el-Melik as a Moslem shrine. A splendid example of Moslem architecture, the shrine rises above the Holy Rock, which, according to the Talmud, covers the mouth of an abyss in which the waters of the Flood are heard roaring. Abraham and Melchizedek are said to have sacrificed here. The Dome was regarded as the center of the world, and the spot upon which the Ark of the Covenant stood. Moslems maintains that beneath the Rock is the Bir el-Arwah, or well of the souls, where the souls of the dead assemble to pray twice weekly. Mohammed himself prayed at the shrine and declared that one prayer there was worth a thousand elsewhere. Legend says Mohammed was translated to heaven from this spot on the back of el-Barak, his miraculous steed. Hairs from the Prophet’s head are preserved at the shrine, and in it are also several Korans of great age. This unusual picture was made from the window of the Grand Mufti’s room in the office of the Moslem Supreme Council of Palestine. (No. 6 of a Series)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: OUR LADY OF MERCY IN LIMA #C-1345 LIMA, Peru -- The church of Our Lady of Mercy -- “Nuestra Senora de la Merced” -- is one of Peru’s oldest religious edifices. Its tower, belfry and facade were recently restored in their original style by the Peruvian government. The monks who built it, scions of Spanish aristocracy, are believed to have erected a hermitage in the Rimac Valley even before the founding of Lima, and they figured prominently in the city’s early history. In the cloistered garden of Our Lady is a fig tree which was planted more than 400 years ago by Friar Francisco Bobadella, one of the founders. Our Lady of Mercy is the patron saint of the Peruvian Army. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (HHS-TOR-CAN-MES-5D-6-C)

- "Borda gives to God."
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: ‘BORDA GIVES TO GOD’ #C-1347 TASCO, Mexico [sic] -- Few churches in the world have been founded under more unusual circumstances than this magnificent edifice here which was completed in 1757. The man who built it was a French miner, Joseph le Borde, called by the Mexicans Jose de la Borda. The story is that one day la Borda, downcast over a streak of bad luck, was on his way to Mexico City when his mule’s hoof sank into the ground and stuck there. Borda dismounted and examined the ground. There he discovered evidence of a vein of silver, from which he was to amass a huge fortune. The incident restored his faith and he decided to erect a church dedicated to San Sebastian and Santa Prisca; hence the Mexican saying, “God gives to Borda, Borda gives to God.” The mines discovered by Borda still produce vast quantities of silver. Tasco itself has been declared a national monument by the Mexican Government and building construction is not permitted unless approved by the national art commission.
