- Former chaplain in Moscow dead at 62.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31308 FORMER CHAPLAIN IN MOSCOW DEAD AT 62 WORCESTER, Mass. -- Father Leopold Braun, A.A., who spent 12 years as chaplain to American Roman Catholics in Moscow, died in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Worcester, Mass., at the age of 62. The Assumptionist was the first American priest to go to Moscow under the 1933 Roosevelt-Litvincoff Agreement, providing for U.S. recognition of Soviet Russia. Under the agreement’s religious protocol, Russia consented to let a clergyman go to Moscow to administer to the spiritual needs of employees in the American embassy. Father Braun served in Moscow from early 1934 until late 1945. After he returned to this country he lectured and wrote as an outspoken critic of the Soviet regime. He helped found the Assumptionist Research and Missionary Institute in New York and was its director until last year. Photo shows Father Braun as he testified in 1952 before a special House of Representatives subcommittee in Washington, D.C., which was investigating the massacre of some 10,000 Polish officers in the Katyn Forest in Russia. - Msgr. Ellis resigns Catholic U. post.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30469 MSGR. ELLIS RESIGNS CATHOLIC U. POST WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Msgr. John Tracy Ellis, noted Catholic scholar, resigned as church history professor at the Catholic University of America after 30 years as student and faculty member. He will assume the same teaching post at the University of San Francisco. A teacher at Catholic University, only Pontifical university in this country, for 28 years, Msgr. Ellis had been church history professor there since 1947. He has been on leave from Catholic University for some months and has been residing there. The priest holds worldwide recognition as a church historian and for encouraging Catholics to deepen and broaden their intellectual life. Last year, Msgr. Ellis charged that Catholic University had been undergoing a “type of suppression” for nearly a decade. He made the comment at a time when the names of four noted theologians were withdrawn by university officials from a list of proposed speakers suggested by a student group. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32044 PRIEST LEADS CONGREGATION TO IMMUNIZATION CENTER (No. 2 in a series of 4 photos) NEWARK, N.J. -- The entire Spanish-speaking congregation of a Roman Catholic church in Newark, N.J., is led after Mass to a polio immunization center. The scene is in a film being distributed by the U.S. Public Health Service, “To Open a Door,” which was produced as an aid to community leaders in their efforts to get “unreachable” sections of the population to take advantage of available drugs and vaccines. Clergymen, who encouraged their own congregations -- and enlisted church members to spread the word -- were important participants in the program, which was called a success as 80 per cent of the Negro and Puerto Rican neighborhood received the polio vaccine. - Conversion efforts.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31746 CONVERSION EFFORTS NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- This chart was prepared by a Roman Catholic theologian after study of a nationwide survey. According to Father John A. O’Brien, research professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, American Catholics lack missionary zeal. Protestants, he noted, are more than twice as active as Catholics in seeking converts. Baptists lead American Christians in that field; 67 per cent of all Baptists actively seek to win others to their church. Following them are “other smaller Protestant denominations,” 61 per cent; Presbyterians, 59; Methodist, 56; Episcopalians, 54; Lutherans, 49; Congregationalists, 32; and Catholics, 28 per cent. In 1963 there were only 125,670 conversions to Catholicism in the U.S., a decade low, and 17,000 below the record high established in 1959. Father O’Brien said it required 361 Catholics to win one convert in 1963. “What it really means,” he said, “is that only about five of the 361 make any effort to share their faith. The remaining 356 don’t lift a finger to help.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FRE-NY-10D-64-W)

- Chaplain to the wounded.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CHAPLAIN TO THE WOUNDED #1683 NEW YORK -- The end of the war and demobilization have altered some aspects of the Army chaplain work, but for some the job is still vital. Caring for the wounded in the hospitals is a task to which many churchmen in uniform are turning as a continuation of the work they performed so ably during the war. These four chaplains at Halloran General Hospital on Staten Island, are typical of the clergymen working in large army and veterans hospitals. They are left to right: Lt. Col. John M. Bellamy, Catholic, Massena, N.Y.; Capt. Aaron Blumenthal, Jewish, Houston, Texas; Lt. John D. Laida, Protestant, Syracuse, N.Y.; and Capt. Emanuel Carlsen, Protestant, Chicago.
