- Text transcribed from caption: MOTHER CABRINI CANONIZATION SCHEDULED # R 1813 NEW YORK -- The solemn canonization ceremony of Mother Francesca Xavier Cabrini, first United States citizen to become a saint, will take place in the Basilica of St. Peter’s in late June or July, the Vatican press service has announced. Here six youngsters hold up their hands in supplication before a life-like portrait of the founder of Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A Pontifical High Mass will be sung by Cardinal Gerlier in Lyons Cathedral. An outspoken opponent of the Nazis during the occupation of France, Cardinal Gerlier was responsible for saving many Jewish children from falling to the hands of the Nazis. - Text transcribed from caption: #C-4426 FIRST MOHAWK TO BECOME A JESUIT ST. REGIS, Quebec -- The Rev. Michael K. Jacobs, father superior of the St. Regis mission on the St. Lawrence River here, is the first of North America’s 37,000 Iroquois to become a Jesuit. A full-blooded Mohawk (one of the member tribes of the Iroquois), Father Jacobs is said to be the only priest to serve at one time in two provinces, two countries and under three bishops. His parish lies partly in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, and partly in New York State. And his 3, 100 parishioners are both Canadian and American.
