- Fighting priest' in Vietnam relieved of command.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30948 'FIGHTING PRIEST' IN VIETNAM RELIEVED OF COMMAND SAIGON, So. Vietnam -- Father Augustin Nguyen Loc Hoa, a Chinese priest who has headed a corps of volunteers fighting Communist guerrillas in South Vietnam since 1959, has been relieved of his command. A major of the South Vietnamese army has been named to replace him as leader of about 1,200 men who have carved out a safe haven in the Hai Yen sector of the Communist-dominated Camau peninsula of South Vietnam. The 56-year-old priest, shown here working at an outpost of the Binh Hung village, has been a symbol of freedom to Catholics in Vietnam and elsewhere. He is a former Lt. Col. in the Chinese Nationalist Army and fled Communist China in 1951 with several hundred followers. He went first to North Vietnam, then Cambodia and finally to South Vietnam where Chinese and Vietnamese took up arms to help him fight Vietcong guerrillas. No official government explanation for the replacement has so far come from Saigon. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-4D-64-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31045 THE EYES ARE ECUMENICAL WALNUT CREEK, Cal. -- A Roman Catholic optometrist smiles as he watches hundreds of old eyeglasses, frames and lenses added to a growing pile destined for the Presbyterian Eye Clinic at Taegu, Korea. Head of the project, “Eyes for Korea,” is Dr. George Hurd, far left; helping the campaign, left to right, are Dr. Kan of Oakland, Cal., president of a two-country optometric society; and Mrs. Ross Griffin and Mrs. James Crosby of regional women’s groups. A Presbyterian patient, Mrs. Elsie Exner of Walnut Creek, Cal., started the campaign rolling when she mentioned to Dr. Hurd the need of the Korean eye clinic for old eyeglasses. He enlisted opticians and optometrists over a wide area, and in a short time 15,000 sets of usable, old glasses were contributed. Manufacturers contributed 500 new frames. All are consigned to Dr. Howard Moffett, chief of the Presbyterian Medical Center at Taegu. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AKM-WC-5D-64-W)

- Fair visitors to see famed El Greco canvas.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30776 FAIR VISITORS TO SEE FAMED EL GRECO CANVAS NEW YORK -- The Spanish Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair has received government approval to display this famous 400-year-old religious painting by El Greco, entitled “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz.” The canvas was recently removed from a back wall of the Santo Tome Catholic church in Toledo, with permission of Enrique Cardinal Pla y Deniel, Primate of Spain. Only once before was the delicate task of peeling the canvas off the wall attempted in about 400 years, and that took place during the Spanish Civil War when Toledo and its art treasures were in peril. Following the war, the 24 by 15 feet canvas was restored and remounted on the wall of the ancient church. The painting consists of two scene symbolizing heaven and earth, with the lower portion showing the body of the count being placed into his grave by St. Stephen and St. Augustine, and the upper part depicting the count’s soul in heaven.
