- Text transcribed from caption: SUGGESTED FOR USE IN CONNECTION WITH REFORMATION DAY, OCT. 31, 1949 LUTHER BEFORE CHARLES V #1574 Three months after the Papal ban was pronounced against him, Martin Luther appeared before Emperor Charles V. But his impassioned oratory failed to influence the emperor (shown rising from his throne) and the ban was confirmed by imperial authority at the Diet of Worms, little more than a month after the scene above took place. - Text transcribed from caption: EXAMINE OLD TESTAMENT MANUSCRIPT #P-2018A NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A 2,000-year-old scroll accidentally discovered in Palestine early last year is examined at American Schools of Oriental Research at Yale University. Scroll is one of several ancient Hebrew manuscripts to be found at same time. The Old Testaments manuscripts--whose discovery was hailed as one of the most significant of its kind in modern times--include the oldest known copy of the Book of Isaiah. Left to right: Prof. Millar Burrows, Winkley Professor of Biblical Theology at Yale, who will edit published translation of manuscripts; Metropolitan Athanasius Yeshue Samuel of the Syrian Orthodox Monastery of St. Mark in Jerusalem, who owns the scrolls; John C. Trever, director of the department of English Bible, International Council of Religious Education; and the Rev. E. Sugar of the Syrian Orthodox Church. Collins of Toronto, minister of the Fairfield United church, Hamilton, has been appointed assistant minister of the Colborne Street United church, London, Ont., which has a large congregation. She is one of the few women ministers of the United Church of Canada to be named to town or city churches.
