Miss Nora Hellen sings as she walks through a ward at Goldwater Hospital on New York’s Welfare Island. Through the work of Miss Hellen, some 150 artists contribute their services annually to hospital entertainment. The program is directed by the Hospital Music Service of the Manhattan Division of the Protestant Council of the City of New York. In 1963 this committee of the Manhattan Division of the Protestant Council of the City of New York arranged 596 entertainment-visits to hospitals, most of them in welfare and charity wards. Left to right, the group includes Viola Purvis, Nora Hellen, Arlene Carey, the Rev. Austin McRaven Warner, the Rev. Mitchell L. Curry and Beatrice Fulcher. Below, Miss Hellen, head of the Hospital Music Service, ends a long day of entertaining the sick and the infirm by planning the next day’s program in her apartment overlooking the East River. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31174 TOPPING-OUT CEREMONY MARKS CHAPEL PROGRESS NEW YORK -- An eight-foot Douglas Fir tree was hoisted to the top of the Protestant Chapel at Kennedy International Airport in New York in a centuries-old ceremony marking one-third completion of the structure. Holding guidelines (right photo) from left to right are Edgar Tafel, architect who designed the chapel for the Protestant Council of the City of New York; R.L. Cowan, chairman of the airport chapel committee, and the Rev. William J. Boone, chaplain who has been developing a united Protestant ministry at the airport while the chapel has been under construction. Looking on is James G. Skinner, president of the building firm of Skinner & Cook. The chapel is being erected in the shape of a Latin cross at the edge of the airport lagoon. The Council, through its Hospital Music Guild, provides music in local VA, Army and Navy hospitals. And scenes like that above, with YMCA leader Norman Lloyd at the piano, are the result.
