Title: Charred Cross -- symbol of reconciliation.
Description: Text transcribed from caption: P-30864 CHARRED CROSS -- SYMBOL OF RECONCILIATION NEW YORK -- In solemn services in the Music Garden at the rear of the Protestant and Orthodox Center at the New York World’s Fair, the famed Charred Cross of Coventry Cathedral in England was dedicated as a reminder of the Christian message of reconciliation. Made from two charred oak beams that fell from the roof of the cathedral as it was destroyed in a 9140 German bombing raid, the Cross and the adjoining inscription, “Father Forgive,” will be on exhibit at the pavilion for the two years of the Fair. Dr. H.C.N. Williams (at far left), provost of Coventry Cathedral, presented the cross and a smaller Cross of Nails, made from 14th-century hand-forged nails, as symbols of the Christian message that “crucifixion must always be followed by resurrection.” Others taking part in the service (from left to right) were: Dr. James W. Kennedy, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, New York, and chairman of the committee of the U.S. Conference for the World Council of Churches which arranged for display of the Cross; Dr. Arthur Lee Kinsolving, rector of St. James Episcopal church, New York, and president of the Protestant Council of the City of New York, sponsor of the world’s fair pavilion; Dr. Cynthia C. Irwin Miller of Columbus, Ind., outgoing NCC head. Bishop Mueller, who comes from Indianapolis, Ind., was elected to the National Council post at its triennial General Assembly in Philadelphia. Auxiliary Bishop Raymond P. Hillinger of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago (right) presents the first John F. Kennedy Award to Dr. Blake. Other participants in the dinner included the Rev. Ulysses B. Blakeley, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Chicago, who said grace, and Rabbi Irving J. Rosenbaum of the Chicago Loop Synagogue, who delivered the benediction. Dr. Blake, a leader of the National Council of Churches' anti-discrimination effort and a personal participant in integration demonstrations, called on American religious groups to recognize their responsibility to lead the first fight against racial injustice. Accompanied by five dancers, she portrays her spiritual journey -- from the despair when illness threatened to end her career at the age of nineteen -- to the vigor, joy and gratitude that came when she became a Christian. Christian hymns, sung by a 20-voice choir and accompanied by classical Japanese instruments, provide background. The unique performance has been recorded on a 20-minute color film by the National Christian Council of Japan. It is available in the United Sates, with an English soundtrack, through the Radio, Visual Education and Mass Communication Committee (RAVEMCCO) of the National Council of Churches in New York. The scene is from a new documentary film, “The Captive,” produced through the National Council of Churches under the sponsorship of eight member denominations. Tracing the plight of an actual man whose one skill, digging coal, is now obsolete, the documentary calls attention to pockets of poverty throughout the country and seeks to stimulate concern over ways to free the nation’s “captive poor.” The Council on International Nontheatrical Events gave “The Captive” one of its 1964 Golden Eagle Film Awards and included it among films chosen to represent the U.S. at major overseas film festivals. The group was led by Dr. Robert W. Spike of New York, at left, executive director of the NCC’s Commission on Religion and Race, which played a key role in organizing the demonstration and stimulating participation by churchmen and women. With Dr. Spike is the Rev. John W. Williams of Kansas City, Mo., a leader of the National Baptist Convention of American and a vice president-at-large of the NCC. Title: Map shows ‘unchurched’ population.
Description: Text transcribed from caption: PC-46065 MAP SHOWS ‘UNCHURCHED’ POPULATION WASHINGTON, D.C. -- This map of the continental United States shows, on a county-by-county basis, the percentage of the “unchurched" population as of 1971. The term “unchurched" in this case refers to all those persons who are not on the church rolls of any Christian denomination. The dark grey areas on the map indicate counties where more than 60 percent of the population are not on Christian church membership rolls, while the light grey areas are counties where 40 to 60 percent can be considered unchurched. The white areas have been, according to the data available, up to 40 percent of the population belonging to a Christian denomination. The map was prepared by the Glenmary Research Center, Washington, D.C., a Roman Catholic agency, and is based on data on church membership rolls found in “Churches and Church Membership in the United States: 1971" issued earlier this year. The study was compiled by Douglas W. Johnson, staff associate at the National Council of Churches’ Office of Research, Evaluation and Planning, New York; Paul R. Picard, director of research, Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, St. Louis; and Father Bernard Quinn, director of the Glenmary Research Center. While the data contained in the report encompasses just 80.9 percent of Christian church members, on the map county percentages of the unchurched were adjusted downwards to compensate for the unreported 19.2 percent. Also, since some denominations counted all baptized persons, including infants, and others did not, for the purposes of the map, membership statistics have been adjusted so that children of members in denominations that do not count infants are not included among the unchurched.
