- Off to new post.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30448 OFF TO NEW POST CAPETOWN, So. Africa -- A famed Anglican prelate waves goodbye to well-wishers at Capetown. Archbishop Joost de Blank of Capetown left for England where he will be one of the four Canons of Westminster. During his almost seven years of service in South Africa, Archbishop de Blank won fame and respect for his continuing campaign against the apartheid (racial segregation) policies of the government. His retirement was dictated by poor health; last year he was forced to go to England for treatment and convalescence. Capetown Anglicans will elect his successor in February. - New Anglican Archbishop of Capetown.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30580 NEW ANGLICAN ARCHBISHOP OF CAPETOWN CAPETOWN -- Bishop Robert Selby Taylor of Grahamstown, a 53-year-old, six-foot athletic clergyman, was elected Archbishop of Capetown, automatically becoming Metropolitan of the Anglican Church of the Province of South Africa. He succeeds Archbishop Joost de Blank, who retired because of ill health and has been named a canon of Westminster Abbey. Like Dr. de Blank, who gained worldwide attention for his out-spoken attacks on South Africa's apartheid policy, Archbishop Taylor is a staunch foe of racial segregation. A native of Yorkshire, Archbishop Taylor has headed the Grahamstown diocese since 1959. He is a former bishop of Northern Rhodesia and of Pretoria. He was elected archbishop by an assembly of clergy, laity and bishops which deliberated three days before agreeing on a successor to Dr. de Blank. - Churchmen in the news.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CHURCHMEN IN THE NEWS Son of Abyssinian King is Last of Desert Hermit Monks By Religious News Service CAIRO -- The son of an Abyssinian king is the last of the hermit monks in the Egyptian desert. In a dirty cave swept only by desert gales Abd el Messieh (“Slave of Christ”) has lived alone for the past nine years, seeing other human beings only when he makes his weekly visit to the Baramous Monastery in Wadi Natron, a Coptic Christian institution, for his food and water. The cave in the desert marked the end of a 3,000 mile trail over which Abd el Messieh walked after his father had been killed in battle. His father, an Abyssinian Rass, or king, died in the Battle of Aduwa in 1896, when the Ethiopians scored a decisive victory over the invading Italians.

- Church scores proposed Ethiopia constitution.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45923 CHURCH SCORES PROPOSED ETHIOPIA CONSTITUTION ADDIS ABABA -- The Ethiopian Orthodox Church issued a strong protest to a proposed new constitution drafted by military leaders who have stripped Emperor Haile Selassie (left) of any real power. Signed by Patriarch Theophilos (right) and members of the Holy Synod, the protest charged that the military is trying to deestablish the Church. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church, which is Coptic in background, is the State Church with the emperor as titular head. It has played a dominant role in the nation since the Middle Ages and traces its origins to the Fourth Century. Patriarch Theophilos and his episcopal colleagues issued their protest a few days after the military reduced Emperor Selassie, who is 82, to a figurehead. By abolishing the emperor’s crown council, court of justice and military committee, the armed forces brought an end to the world’s last absolute monarchy.
