- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30877 PIETA’S SAFE ARRIVAL NEW YORK -- Pieta, the Michelangelo masterpiece depicting the dead Christ lying in the arms of Mary, arrives safely in New York after its long and, thankfully, uneventful trip from Vatican City. Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, who secured the permission of the late Pop John XXIII to bring the statue to the U.S., is shown at right after he had blessed the Pieta aboard a barge in the harbor. Pope Paul VI also approved the cardinal’s request. Bound for the World’s Fair where an estimated 15 million people will view it at the Vatican Pavilion, the masterpiece was insured for $6 million while in transit. Another statue, “The Good Shepherd,” also brought from Vatican City, was insured for $2 million. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-4C-64-W)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30864 CHARRED CROSS -- SYMBOL OF RECONCILIATION NEW YORK -- In solemn services in the Music Garden at the rear of the Protestant and Orthodox Center at the New York World’s Fair, the famed Charred Cross of Coventry Cathedral in England was dedicated as a reminder of the Christian message of reconciliation. Made from two charred oak beams that fell from the roof of the cathedral as it was destroyed in a 9140 German bombing raid, the Cross and the adjoining inscription, “Father Forgive,” will be on exhibit at the pavilion for the two years of the Fair. Dr. H.C.N. Williams (at far left), provost of Coventry Cathedral, presented the cross and a smaller Cross of Nails, made from 14th-century hand-forged nails, as symbols of the Christian message that “crucifixion must always be followed by resurrection.” Others taking part in the service (from left to right) were: Dr. James W. Kennedy, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, New York, and chairman of the committee of the U.S. Conference for the World Council of Churches which arranged for display of the Cross; Dr. Arthur Lee Kinsolving, rector of St. James Episcopal church, New York, and president of the Protestant Council of the City of New York, sponsor of the world’s fair pavilion; Dr. Cynthia C. Wedel of New York, assistant general secretary for program, National Council of Churches; Greek Orthodox Archdeacon Polycarp; Archbishop Iakovos, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America and a WCC president; Charles C. Parlin of New York, Methodist layman and a WCC president, and Protestant Episcopal Bishop Horace W.B. Donegan of New York. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BS-NY-4C-64-NBM)

- Fighting priest' in Vietnam relieved of command.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30948 'FIGHTING PRIEST' IN VIETNAM RELIEVED OF COMMAND SAIGON, So. Vietnam -- Father Augustin Nguyen Loc Hoa, a Chinese priest who has headed a corps of volunteers fighting Communist guerrillas in South Vietnam since 1959, has been relieved of his command. A major of the South Vietnamese army has been named to replace him as leader of about 1,200 men who have carved out a safe haven in the Hai Yen sector of the Communist-dominated Camau peninsula of South Vietnam. The 56-year-old priest, shown here working at an outpost of the Binh Hung village, has been a symbol of freedom to Catholics in Vietnam and elsewhere. He is a former Lt. Col. in the Chinese Nationalist Army and fled Communist China in 1951 with several hundred followers. He went first to North Vietnam, then Cambodia and finally to South Vietnam where Chinese and Vietnamese took up arms to help him fight Vietcong guerrillas. No official government explanation for the replacement has so far come from Saigon. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-4D-64-NAB)

- The eyes are ecumenical.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31045 THE EYES ARE ECUMENICAL WALNUT CREEK, Cal. -- A Roman Catholic optometrist smiles as he watches hundreds of old eyeglasses, frames and lenses added to a growing pile destined for the Presbyterian Eye Clinic at Taegu, Korea. Head of the project, “Eyes for Korea,” is Dr. George Hurd, far left; helping the campaign, left to right, are Dr. Kan of Oakland, Cal., president of a two-country optometric society; and Mrs. Ross Griffin and Mrs. James Crosby of regional women’s groups. A Presbyterian patient, Mrs. Elsie Exner of Walnut Creek, Cal., started the campaign rolling when she mentioned to Dr. Hurd the need of the Korean eye clinic for old eyeglasses. He enlisted opticians and optometrists over a wide area, and in a short time 15,000 sets of usable, old glasses were contributed. Manufacturers contributed 500 new frames. All are consigned to Dr. Howard Moffett, chief of the Presbyterian Medical Center at Taegu. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AKM-WC-5D-64-W)
