- The Cushing story
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31209 THE CUSHING STORY: MISSIONS, ECUMENISM (Second of a Series of 2 Photo Layouts) BOSTON -- Foreign missions and ecumenism distinguish the 25-year episcopate of Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston. The “man of many hats” marked the 25th anniversary of his consecration on June 29. At top left, his mission zeal is epitomized by yet another hat, a “lluchu” given to him by Indians in Bolivia. Cardinal Cushing has been honored by two Popes for his foundation and maintenance of the Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle for Latin America. One hundred U.S. priests now serve areas long hit by a shortage of clergy, and the prelate, famed as a fund-raiser, supports their work at a cost of $1 million annually. At upper right, he is shown as he was embraced in 1947 by Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, supreme leader of Eastern Orthodoxy -- the patriarch was then Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in North and South America. Cardinal Cushing’s relations with the Orthodox and Protestants have spurred the ecumenical movement in the U.S.; in recent years he has preached or lectured before many non-Catholic groups. Below, left, he is shown with his old friend, Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, as they participated in an unprecedented Catholic-Protestant Colloquium at Harvard. With them are Dr. Nathan Pusey, Harvard’s president, and Dr. Samuel H. Miller, Dean of Harvard Divinity School and chairman of the Massachusetts Council of Churches’ Committee on Christian Unity. - Text transcribed from caption: FRONTIER PARSONAGE #4909 MOOSE FACTORY, Ont. -- The Rev. Gilbert Thompson (standing in doorway), is a bilingual rural dean since he holds service in Cree as well as in English. When the occasion demands he can also preach a little in Eskimo dialects. His Indian parishioners far outnumber the whites. Above, some of them prepare to return home on snowshoes after church services. Woman on left has to carry a “ticnogan” or papoose board as well. During winter Sundays Mr. Thompson must walk eight miles through snowdrifts to conduct his services in this frontier town and in neighboring Moosonee. - Grist mill church.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: GRIST MILL CHURCH #S-5015 CLINTON, Tenn. -- Rural parishioners enter St. Mary’s Chapel, their tiny, unpainted one-room church hewed from rough pine boards and containing a home-made pulpit. Located in the village of Carroll Hollow, near here, it was until recently a roadside grist mill where the neighboring farmers brought their wheat and corn to be ground. But they thought it more important to have a church. So a small, white cross replaced a business sign over the doorway and the hut was immediately converted to the service of God.
