The pontiff is shown holding blessed palms as he is carried on his portable throne amidst cheering crowds during procession under the basilica's porch. - Pope welcomes Orthodox delegates.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32155 POPE WELCOMES ORTHODOX DELEGATES VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI chats with Metropolitan Meliton of Heliopolis, one of two representatives of Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras of Istanbul received by the pontiff in a private talk. The other Eastern Orthodox leader was Metropolitan Chrysostom of Hydra, secretary of the Third Pan-Orthodox Conference held at Rhodes, Greece, last November. Metropolitan Meliton presided over the conference. Greeting the two Orthodox delegates as “dear brothers in Christ,” the Pope said their meeting was a “profoundly happy event.” The Rhodes conference authorized individual Orthodox Churches to continue exploration with the Catholic Church on means for establishing closer relations. It voted, however, to postpone any collective approach to Rome for unity talks until the end of the Vatican Council. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-2C-65-NAB)

- Church scores proposed Ethiopia constitution.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45923 CHURCH SCORES PROPOSED ETHIOPIA CONSTITUTION ADDIS ABABA -- The Ethiopian Orthodox Church issued a strong protest to a proposed new constitution drafted by military leaders who have stripped Emperor Haile Selassie (left) of any real power. Signed by Patriarch Theophilos (right) and members of the Holy Synod, the protest charged that the military is trying to deestablish the Church. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church, which is Coptic in background, is the State Church with the emperor as titular head. It has played a dominant role in the nation since the Middle Ages and traces its origins to the Fourth Century. Patriarch Theophilos and his episcopal colleagues issued their protest a few days after the military reduced Emperor Selassie, who is 82, to a figurehead. By abolishing the emperor’s crown council, court of justice and military committee, the armed forces brought an end to the world’s last absolute monarchy. Jackson, who led a drive in Congress to block trade concessions to the USSR unless emigration was made easier. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46174 TWO VIEWS OF BUSING BOSTON -- Students at Boston’s Hyde Park High School (top photo) look through a shattered window of their school bus, damaged when fights broke out between black and white students at the school. Several students were injured in the incident, just part of the violence which has marred Boston’s court-ordered busing plan since the start of the school year. A more peaceful view of busing is achieved by four Boston students as they discuss school desegregation efforts with a Charlotte, N.C., student coordinating council (bottom photo). The four students (foreground left to right), Barbara Steer, Dana Gonsal, Bob Messina and Linda Lawrence, are members of the Hyde Park High School biracial committee who were invited to the Southern City by students to get a look at integration and how it works in Charlotte’s public high schools, where a massive busing program has been in effect for 10 years. “We’re still working at it every day, and we don’t have any miracle answers," a Charlotte student told the Boston group. “But what was a new situation for us 10 years ago is a new situation for you now. And we want you to know we’ve learned a lot about judging anybody, black or white, as an individual. It just took time." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-BOS/NC-10D-74-DS)

- Calley conviction overturned.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46071 CALLEY CONVICTION OVERTURNED COLUMBUS, Ga. -- A federal judge has overturned the 1971 murder conviction of former Army Lt. William Calley, who was charged with murdering at least 22 Vietnamese civilians in the My Lai massacre, and has ordered that he be freed from imprisonment at Forth Leavenworth, Kansas. U.S. District Judge J. Robert Elliott cited massive pretrial publicity, improperly drawn charges presented by Arm officers, and the denial of Lt. Calley’s request to call high-ranking Pentagon officials to testify as reasons for his action. He contended that the conviction was constitutionally invalid. The Army said that it had recommended to the Justice Department that the decision be appealed and that Mr. Calley would not be released pending disposition of the appeal. - Nun comments on women's commission.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45058 NUN COMMENTS ON WOMEN'S COMMISSION ROME -- Sister Maria Teresa MacLeod is a 42-year-old Scottish-born American citizen who has some strong opinions on the role of women in the Roman Catholic Church. She is a member of the Vatican Commission for Women, which met for the first time in mid-November. The commission was established by Pope Paul to look into four areas concerning women -- women in society, the woman as person, women in relation to God and women in the Church. “We (the commission) will discuss human problems and social justice rather than what makes women different -- after all it would defeat the purpose to isolate women and say that they are different," Sister MacLeod said in an interview. "They are human beings with problems but we must remember that men have problems too. In fact, the whole aspect of Christian anthropology must be re-thought in terms of 20th Century physiology and psychology. “ "With regard to women's role in the Church, if you accept that women may not become priests, there is still no reason why they should not have reasonable participation in those areas open to lay people,” she continued. "Given that the number of women religious far exceeds the number of men, it is still the men who almost totally dominate the composition of Vatican Commissions." Sister MacLeod, president of Rome's Regina Mundi Institute for Religious Culture and a consultant to the Vatican Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes, feels, however, that most of the men on the commission seem sympathetic to the problems of women and singled out the commission's chairman, Archbishop Enrico Bartoletti, for praise.
