- Graham Arizona crusade draws over 100,000.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30961 GARAHAM ARIZONA CRUSADE DRAWS OVER 100,000 TEMPE, Ariz. -- A total of 104,000 persons attended a crusade held by Evangelist Billy Graham in Arizona State University’s sports stadium at Tempe. Peak attendance was on a Sunday afternoon, when the evangelist likened America to the Biblical city of Sodom: “It, too, was a city of science and learning and moral depravity, and its citizens had a high standard of living.” The crowd included many Navajo Indians, including Mrs. Katharine Jackson and her daughter, Mrs. Katharine Sherman (below) of Tuba City, Ariz., and a special 500-seat section was set aside for Mexican-Americans. - Salute to St. Patrick.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30689 SALUTE TO ST. PATRICK PHEONIX, Ariz. -- An Irishman never forgets, and most particularly -- not on St. Patrick's Day. John O'Riordan and family of Phoenix hoist an Irish flag alongside Old Glory in honor of St. Patrick. This Limerick-born son of the Ould Sod was born on the Saint's feast day. Mr. O'Riordan also flies the colors of Ireland on U.S. national holidays. "The Munster flag waving in front of my home," he says, "refers to the Southern Province which incorporates six counties of which Limerick, my county, was one. This flag shows crowns and denotes royalty reaching back into history." Mr. O'Riordan, who has lived in the U.S. since 1949, made his first return trip to Ireland last year, taking along his family. His native village of Abbeyfeale was unchanged, he said; it still sends a great number of its sons on to the priesthood. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (HU-PHE-3A-64-W)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: OLDEST ARIZONA’S CATHOLIC MISSION #1632 TUCSON, Ariz. -- The San Xavier del Bac Mission for Papago Indian eleven miles southwest of Tucson, is striking in its symmetry and shows vestiges of the once-brilliant decoration of its interior. The mission was originally built in 1692 by the famous Spanish “Padre on Horseback,” Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, a Jesuit. In the latter part of the 18th century it passed into the hands of the Franciscan Fathers, who still tend to the needs of the Indian population.
