- Fire destroys Hartford Cathedral.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-20114. FIRE DESTROYS HARTFORD CATHEDRAL. HARTFORD, CONN. St. Joseph's Cathedral here looks like a hollow shell after an early morning fire destroyed the 64-year-old mother church of the Hartford Archdiocese. The blaze, which started in the basement below the altar, was discovered during the 7 a.m. mass. More than 135 firemen battled the flames for five hours in 16-degree temperature. Damage was estimated at $5,000,000. A few hours earlier, a midnight blaze destroyed another Catholic church -- St. Patrick's in the city's business area.
